Do you listen to music? Does it help?

Do you guys listen to music while training? My gym has the worst music to work out to. But I was wondering how many of you bring your own music and why? I have before but I normally I just block everything out anyway. Most the time I don't hear anything at all anyway.
Does it help you guys at all? I mean I can understand maybe to get a kick start but usually my first set is a kick start enough for me anyway.

I doubt music makes much if any difference to performance. I work out at home and listen to jumpstyle and hardstyle, i have it on loudish the bass vibrates my room and sometimes the room below me. I certainly prefer to train whilst listening to music that i like, if i was at a gym that played shit music i would definatley take my own.

I work out early in the morning and in my apartment and always have some music playing pretty softly (not to be confused with busting out some Kenny G during a set of deads, which would be "soft music"). I agree with that it's not a performance issue; playing music that you like just makes a workout more enjoyable.

I HAVE to have music. I go into my little shell and it's just me and the weights. There could be a dozen morons hovering around but I don't notice 'em at all when some Systen of a Down is screaming in my ears. I go so far as to cue a song, then wait for a particular part to begin the set. So to me I do think it affects performance - it would feel foreign to me not to have it.

In this sense of performance, although not in the getting pumped up to KILL THAT SHIT one, I'd say music is useful. I need some sort of background noise so I'm not lifting in complete silence, but it's not music-specific. If for some reason I weren't able to lsiten to music, I think the air conditioner, a fan, or anything else that would provide consistent noise would be a decent substitute.

Although if my choice were between System of a Down and silence, I might have to rethink what I just said... ;)

i also have to have music. i forgot my mp3 player the other day and walked out of the gym. i couldnt get it going at all! i had just loaded some different stuff on there and left it on my desk. dammit!

i usually listen to RATM, avenged sevenfold, audioslave, and disturbed.

otherwise I pick up on other people's conversations, lame music or just dead silence...all of which don't work for me in the gym.

i dont have an mp3 player and my rec doesnt play music. at first, it was different, cuz i was used to background music like in my old gym (usually country, what can i say, im a redneck from louisiana). but now, i dont even notice. after a few warm up sets, im usually in my own little world.

I used to, and I think it did help me concentrate more on getting fired up and pushing that bit extra.
The only reason I stopped is because I was using an iPod and: 1. I could never get it in a comfortable position, arm strap or pocket and 2. The headphones would get it the way, especially when doing deadlifts and squats.

Yanni gets me fuckin' psyched. Enya is good too.

Never mess with Weird Al & me in the gym. That's like mixing acetone & peroxide. x_x

run the headphones under your shirt and if you can get a way to clip the ipod on your hip to the side you are golden.

Hell, yeah, it works. Try working out to "Hand Jive" (at this yuppy gym I was at) as opposed to "Enter Sandman" (along with other bad ass shit on my MP3 player). There is a distinct difference on how it effects your intensity.

My gym plays a bunch of black-eyed peas and techno so I really should get an iPod to drain them out. Usually in between sets I eavesdrop on other people's converstations and silently pray to God that I found these forums. Other times I'll just watch other people and see what they're doing. People are funny, they definitely make the time go by.

I love techno. Only my kind've techno, though. Not the generic club/trance/dance shit.

Yeah I don't mind some techno, but the kind this gym plays is pretty damn lousy. It's basically just a bunch of shitty songs remixed to try and sound like club music. I'd much prefer they just play death metal.

I change songs almost every time I'm changing exercises - could not make it w/out my music - if I leave my iPod on my desk then I am going back to get it - simple as that

Death metal gets on my nerves. Now metalcore... :p

Buttrock Goa is the best techno there is.

I need my MP3 player as well. Between my sets I'll take off the headset and load up the weights/talk to my workout partner, but as soon as the bar is in front of me and it's time to focus, I put my headset on, skip to a track that I know will light a fire under my ass and get in the zone.

This is most important when I deadlift and squat. I have a song ready, I walk up to the bar and picture myself accomplishing my goal for the set, then I'll wait for the music to kick in and it's my cue to make it happen.

I honestly think that music can make the difference between the bar going up, or staying on the floor.

I require some fast metal while Im at the gym, it doesn't so much help me with weighs as with the cardio though. When Im on the bike and a killer riff starts playing at high speed I up the level on the bike from 9 to 12 and pump along at 100rpm until I get up to the 155ish bpm range.

I like old school thrash, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Testament but also alot of Death Metal Bloodbath, Lamb of God, Devildriver etc...

The music at my gym is simply fabulous and euro remixes of ashley simpson get me pumped for those tough stairmaster sessions.

as a trigger the right music can make a huge difference but for me, once the set starts everything fades out of focus.

I absolutely CAN NOT do cardio without music. after 5 mins i just get bored as hell. Lifing i can manage without music though, but i'd rather have my own music just to keep out the crap that's played in my gym.

When I train at MY gym...I have 9 cd's to choose from. All filled with ACDC, Metallica, and the such.

One day a week I train at the local "fitness center" that plays pop Greek music. Once I get started, I don't hear anything anyway. If you are "in focus" you shouldn't hear anything.

I agree w/ you guiness- Crank up the music, drown out the crap music in the gym/ and all the other people. I like it because when I have my headphones in people just leave me alone, I feel like I can focus. Love to work out to System of a Down, Disturbed, & Rage Against the Machine!

SOAD & Disturbed are great.

G5 wouldn't know nothin' 'bout SOAD though. ;)

Gotta' have the music. I don't use it to get psyched up though nearly as much as I used to. I used to really crank it, get all crazy, and appraoch the lift. And I"d do that every day on at least a couple of sets. Then I read that using too much excitation can actually burn you out. So now I've retrained myself to lift w/ intensity w/out going balls-out shit crazy. I still do it now and then, but only if I"m really trying to peak. Smarter, not harder. ;)

Choices? As I Lay Dying, DevilDriver, Meshuggah, Disturbed/Godsmack (same band, right? Lol), Judas Priest, etc.

Ahh, an As I Lay Dying fan, huh? You might like some of this stuff then...

SkyCameFalling (best band ever), InDyingDays, Atreyu (old stuff, fucking sellouts - I was close with the lead singer when they played small venues back here on LI - now, pfffftttt), Zao (yeah, go Christian metalcore), Alove For Enemies, Nothingface, Mudvayne, Hopesfall (great melodic metalcore), Every Time I Die, Anterrabe (I'm picky here, but their name sounds cool), DownTheSun, Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Curlupanddie (Vegas represent, word), Comeback Kid (kinda happy, not metalcore but it's fun - beware though, it's Canadian), and Caliban.

Christ there are more than I thought.

You know, I was wondering why I stopped bringing my ipod with me, and today the gym decided to remind me. I kid you not, N'sync, followed by backstreet boys, with britiny or someone close to finish.......I almost went to the desk to ask em to turn it off till those particular bands were finished..

You think that's bad? At my old gym it was more like sweatin' to the 1950's! EEEK! GAD!

My gym doesn't play any music at all. I certainly don't NEED music while lifting but it usually helps me to focus and get psyched for heavier sets. The only annoying thing about having your mp3 player is that the headphone cord gets in the way doing rows and deads unless it is tucked into your shirt. I like listening to high octane shit like Batter Up, Over My Dead Body, First Blood, and Life Long Tragedy while lifting.
