Do you like UNIONS????????

dimitrios

New member
I am in the IBEW Local Union #349 in Miami Florida and with out them I would not have half of what I have now. I am sure Unions are not for everyone, but I think they do have there place in trades. How do you guys feel about Unions???

http://www.ibew.org/

I work with the IBEW local in NYC in radio and TV. For the most part all of the union guys I know are cool bros. The one's who annoy me are the one's who will tell you in the middle of a crisis that they are taking their meal break, and your fucked. Then god forbid you go and do something like plug something in while they are out on their meal - they jump down your throat and think your after their job!

its like guy I dont want your job, all I wanted needed was my tv set plugged into the cable outlet!

Overall they serve a valid purpose- but some members take it WAY to far...

Unions were valuable in creating work environments that were fair to workers, follwoing the industrial revolution.

Today, they have largely become pawns in political activity, and many are centers of corruption. Often they limit productivity and are an enemy of the free market economy.

Click onto the link under my post and read "Bush Signs Fast Track" and see if you think that is the right thing to do???

Well, I understand your concerns as a union employee.

I don't know enough about the specifics of the bill. What ca Bush do or not do?

I see it as the 2-party system fucking over a lot of hard working Americans. Bush wanted this for his large contributors, and teh deomcrats fought it because unions are large contributors for them.

I get the feeling that whether it was "right" or not was not discussed.

I hope you are not adversley affected.

I like the idea of unions, but I've always heard horror stories about them.

Coorporate america doesn't give a fuck about the average worker. When times get tight, the first thing they do is lay off employees, yet the higher ups still get paid obscene amounts of money and get tons of perks. When big business sees some 3rd world country to set up its factories because american labor is too expensive, they move. They don't give a fuck about average workers and they'd gladly step on people with families just for a dollar.

Unions watch out for the workers. I was a Teamster briefly while I was a dock worker back in the day.

IBEW Local 50 & SAG here...Shout out to the men that keep America bright....Wish my fellow Union Bro's well....We're on strike as of now....Peace.

unions enable unskilled people to make outrageous wages for brain-dead jobs... i have a friend who makes nearly $40k/year as a produce guy at a local grocery store!!

however, i think that everyone who works 40 hours/week should be able to live w/o worry about paying rent, clothing themselves and/or their children, and food, and even a little leisure and recreation... so maybe unions do serve a purpose... but sometimes it is taken too far ($40k/year to stack fruit!?!)

I hope you guys get what you want Ranger. If we can do anything just ask. Good luck Bro!!!!

When I was just out of college I despised unions for a variety of reasons, yet I have to say that over time I have come to realize that even today they bring a lot of value to the groups of workers they support. And without them you would have basically a minimum wage group working for next to nothing. I have seen corporate greed and it hasn't changed since the beginning of the industrial revolution.

IBEW in da HOUSE!!!!! I'm in Local 2323 in RI. There is no way people (even non-union workers) would have the salary/benefits they have without organized labor. Even non-union companies that don't want thier employees to organize have to pay higher to keep the unions out, so even non-union people do better as a result of unions....

Thats right, I agree with you, you get some karma brother!!!

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Abolish Unions

Unions have outlived their usefulness in this country and do more harm than good.

They allow our workers to be lazy, overpaid and self serving. In every industry where unions are prolific, our products are inferior (i.e. cars...American cars STILL suck).

Union laborers are WAAAY overpaid.

In California we have Grocery store clerks making $25.00 an hour to RUN GROCERIES OVER A FUCKING SCANNER. They get triple time for working holidays!!?? What the fuck is that.

The trucking unions have politicians by the balls. Fucking big rigs shouldnt even be allowed on the road during traffic hour. (or traffic 3-hours in San Diego.

Dont even mention road workers where some illiterate moron is making $20.00 an hour for shoveling dirt and holding up a stop sign. They wont work at night becaus the union says so and if they do they get double time. Fuck that...those assholes work in the middle of rush hour and completely fuck traffic. Make it THEIR JOB to work at night! When there is no one on the raod.....nooo Union rules.

Our telecom workers are Union laborers and they are constantly bitching about having to do ANYTHING extra... and woe is the man who steps foot in the wire room to do a punch down...thats Union work. You can get in BIG trouble for it, we even had a problem because they screamed that plugging in a computer to a wall outlet is UNION WORK. FUCK THAT!

Well if its Union work why arent these lazy bastards out here doing it. Oh wait they are on their break.

Unions only serve to raise the wages of the uneducated. The American public ends up paying for it with goods and services.

Their apprenticeship program is a scam to creat an artificial shortage and keep pay high.

The ONLY thing I can think of where Unions MIGHT still serve a purpose would be to keep employers from hireing illegals aliens for cheaper wages. And that would ONLY be until we can get our USELESS border patrol to stop worrying about people trying to smuggle roids and viagra into the country and start worrying about the real problem.... Illegal immigrants working in our country.

I'm with him on this one

I worked for two unions in my life. Both were the highest paying jobs I ever had. Steelworkers while I worked at Dana Corp. where I made as much as 90k per year. Worked there about four years. The with the IBEW at Lucent/Agere Corp. Worked there about 3 years for about 60k a year. Common thread?? Pay was awesome, benefits kicked butt, and you couldn't get fired................also a common thread?? The union drove these compaines into the ground and I lost my job both times. Like someone said in the early 1900's they were definately needed, now they are pawns of the anti-gun, high tax Democrats. Now I avoid union jobs like the plague. I mean I had coworkers that were caught smoking pot at work and the union got their jobs back, they were TOWMOTOR drivers!! How asinine is that?? Forget about doing a good job, you get paid the same as everyone else. Just do enough to get by, its what your union brothers do!! And when its time for a layoff?? They go by who has their job the longest, they stay. Usually the old timers who are lazy as sin. The young go getters get the boot. Now are you still wondering why unions are on their way out??

I might be getting into the IBEW here in Colorado. My gf's dad is a business manager for a union local here. Debating if i want to be an electrician or a lineman. Unions are good and bad, bad cause they are supported by the same people that are anti gun. But...if you have ever been fucked over by an employer then you would wish you were in a Union. I have had jobs that did not give you a fucking lunch break! Good to see some IBEW guys here.

Go for it, it will be the best move you have ever done. As far as Unions trying to keep people working that have been caught on drugs??? I dont where your from, but here the UNION gives us a drug test and then the Contractor does. So I find it hard to believe that the statement you made was true.

And like I thought, I would get bad Karma. No big deal, just the normal RAT out there afraid to show his or her face. One thing is we are not afraid to speak our mind, and will never hide under a piece of rotten cheese. This is why we are PROUD TO BE UNION
Care for some cheese RAT???

Get your inside wireman's card if you can. Line work is spread out and always outside. The weather determines the days you can work.

businesses bend to the unions and put themselves out of business.

if you want to make more, get a more marketable skill.

I find it humorous that people have so many negative things to say about unions when most of these assholes have never been in a union. Don't get me wrong, unions do certianly have thier downsides, just like anything else, but here is what they do that IMO outweighs the bad things that happen; A bargianed for employment guarantees decent benefits, guarantees that you won't be fired by some manager that has a hard-on for you for no reason other than he/she doesn't like you. You're guaranteed breaks, lunches, and overtime pay. Also, you're guaranteed a decent LIVING wage. For the guy who said unions no longer have any purpose, allow me to retort. Do you think for ONE SECOND that if a company could get away with cutting your wages that they wouldn't do it to make sure that the board of directors' pockets get lined further??? If you answer yes to that question, then you're severely delusional. Also, being in a union doesn't mean you don't have a marketable skill. Can you cut 1,000 pair fiber cable through a D-4 channel bank into a DDM-1000 multiplexer??? NO??? I can!!! Does this mean you're less intelligent than me? No, it just means that I have the advantage of Union bargianed for training that my company MUST provide before they put me out in the field. Look at the difference between my company and my local NON-UNION cable company. Outside technicians for my company (union) $26.59 per hour for straight time, time and a half for o/t up to 12 hours p/w, and doubletime for any o/t above 12 hours. Guaranteed cost of living increases yearly. Holidays, double and a half. No weekly co-pay for benefits, and senoirity based job selection. Oh yeah, we get a nice pension, and a 401k option. Local cable company: outside techs make $18.60 per hour at thier top rate, no guaranteed cost of living raise, no stepped raises from bottom pay, and you have to pay a percentage of your weekly pay for medical benefits, and bosses can arbitrarily terminate you without a valid reason. They can also terminate you if you take extended medical leave, EVEN IF IT'S FOR A VALID REASON!!! Oh yeah, and no pension... This is just one example of the difference between a union shop and a non-union shop.

To the gentleman that hinted that american cars have sucked in the past because of union labor, let's see..... WRONG!!!!! American cars sucked because of American car companies using inferior parts and quality control when they're being built. The operating cost of a Japanese Auto company in Japan is just as high if not higher than any American car co., but with one difference, they provide EVERYTHING that thier employees need. Home, car, medical, clothes, EVERYTHING. They don't pay as much, but they provide thier workers with everything they need. So anyways, you're wrong to say that it's union labor's fault that american cars have sucked, it is the car companies cutting corners that is at fault for that.

What he said.

I currently work in a union shop (Teamsters? United Way? I'm not even sure.) as a part-timer. All of my co-workers are part-timers. We get shafted pretty bad, and after taxes, union dues would end up as something like 1/5 of my paycheck.

I can't afford that. I wish I could. Even though I consider unions to be corrupt in-fighting assholes, it's better than the alternative. And I'm glad they're set up where I work.

The funny thing is, the company (UPS) has regularly failed to meet their contractual obligations with the teamsters, and nothing bad has come of it for them!

I don't know what point I'm trying to make but here it is:

My father used to be in an union but when the time came, they didn't help him out. He was working as a lineman for VECPO (Known as Virginia Power right now) He was fired by a boss who didn't like his attitude. Mind you, this was back in early '70s when employers could have you terminated on basis of cosmetic looks or age or disability. (No ADA back in these days!) His Union didn't come to his aid and he had to go to a friend who was working in management over at headquarters. To make a long story short, he eventually got his job back and left the Union. Guess what?

As of right now, West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina power Union people are on strike and they are in a losing battle! Meanwhile, my dad is still working (You can call him a company man bastard all you want to or even a scab) and his job is still in place. I feel sorry for these people who are striking. I know they are going back to the table to take less than what they had before they walked out.

My point? Let's see, Unions isn't always a good idea. Sure, they can stand up for the common people but it can be disastrous if the plan backfired.

BTW, if you don't understand which company I'm referring to, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina Power are Electric Companies.

I think that they serve a purpose. We tried to get one in where I work and people would support it in private, but when it came down to supporting it at work they got scared. They bought in to the company bs and we never had a chance. The sad thing is, this place needs a union, if only to address the health related issues facing the employees.:(

Everyone complains that Union workers get paid to much, but no one says anything about a Doctor???? Why not?? Do you feel that because they went to school longer then we did so that is why it's ok the charge so much??? I bet Doctors like Unions because they know they will get paid because we have insurance.
