I figure in my whole life I've had 5 true friends.

I have two classes of friends:

First group are fair weather pals. As in the type you suggested, they only come around when they need something from me.

Second group are TRUE friends in every sense of the word!

I have lots of acquaintences as havoc says, girls, guys. True friends maybe 1 or 2, but I dont think that true friends need always be around you, but more so they are always there if you need an opinion or help.

If I left my job, I think this figure would be greatly reduced, friends come and go, true friends are hard to find, thats why its important to live your life for yourself and not the people around you.

Thats what I have always believed in anyhow

Outside of my wife, I have one true friend. The rest are casual friends -- mostly couples that my wife and I can hang out with together.

There are a few on the board that have potential as true friends, but its hard to ascribe that level of friendship until you meet somebody in person, et. al.

I have only one friend that will never let me down and that is Jesus. My wife is my second best friend but she has let me down a few times even though she was sorry for it. As far as others go maybe two dudes from school that I am still tight with. I have made a new friend from my church that is very cool that I think is a true friend but like Pamela said good friends are a rare find.

And don't ever forget you get out of a friendship what you put into it.

My twin brother has always been my best friend. I have had only a few true friends in my life and i think it is lucky to have that much.

In english the word "friend" is used MUCH too easily. No one wants ever to use the word "aquantance". In Dutch we always say "kennis" (aquantance) unless it is a person that we are certain would always be there to help us. Then we say "vriend".
