Do i have to present a cop my ID?

cwc73

New member
Ok, lets say that I am at a bar here in Mississippi. They always have these undercover cops /ABC rolling around asking people (in a douchebag way) for their IDs to prove they are 21. I always have a sober driver and I am 21, so I have nothing to fear. I wanna know if I have to give them my ID. Can I make them give me their ID to prove they are a cop? Also, is there any other things I can do to be a douchebag to them if they try to harass me? Granted, I wouldnt do this to a polite cop or if I was completely shitfaced.

Thanks

PS Tell some funny stories about instances with cops. They make my day.

Hey well I guess I'm in school to be a cop. Yes you can ask for their badge. Remember they are here to help, well at least where I live. I know a lot of places like New Orleans they are pretty corrupt.

Both answers are a yes.
You have to present your Id when requested by a cop and you have to right to see their badge as well.

You can probably try to make arguements on why you shouldn't have had to show them your ID, but at the end of the day - it's not worth it.

They will take you into custody if you don't. It's called a Terry Stop I beleive.

Anyway... happened to me once when I was walking my dog. LOL... real suspicious. I happened to have a 'Failure to Appear' for a traffic ticket - which was bullshit, I worked for a lawfirm that took care of it and I had a processed check from the county for the fines and fees. They just accidently issued a warrant...

I spent 6 hours - from 11pm to 5am - dealing with this because they had to take me in, book me and then get permission to take bail for the other county there before releasing me. I was not to happy.

I got my bail back 6 months later. Unreal how unjust that is, but they don't get any punishment... I simply went 6 MPH over the limit and did my just dos, but they... they take a free man off the streets lock him up, embarass him, take his money... 'Oh... just a clerical error, sorry. Please wait 6 months for your money back"

Worst part about it... I had just moved into a new neighborhood and all my neighbors stood outside and watched me get arrested. LMAO.... they prolly think I am a criminal.

"I have the right to see their badge," but unless a badge has a picture on it, it can easily be bought off of Ebay for a few bucks. Can I ask for a proof of ID? Like an official ID, not just a bronze badge?

you can, but they are going to get a little edgy most likely

if they did, could they charge me with anything? Sober driver, straight home, no alcohol in the car, ect.

If you hang out in coffee houses instead of bars, you won't have to worry about getting 'harassed' by police officers.

I'm in college. Only the "steppers" hang out at coffee shops on the weekend.

I usually hang out in the gym :)

Every police officer that I know is required to carry a 'Commision' ID.. .the badge is just a uniform dressing. The real proof is the Commision ID which shows who they are commmsioned by, etc.

IF you want to fuck with these people, go ahead.

Can they charge you with anything? Absolutely. Will it be a legitimate charge? Most likely not. Willl they take your smartass out back and beat the crap out of you? Probably. Will they get away with it? Probably.

Could you beat the charges? Maybe.

Good Luck.

Fight the POWER!

if they are undercover and in plain clothes- you have a right to request ID...they must provide it. it is not unreasonable to ask for such, in the circumstances you are describing...what is "reasonable" in all circs is a good rule of thumb to follow in order to keep yourself out of trouble..just be polite and not a smartass...it goes a long way, and they'll usually leave you alone if you have no "attitude"...Now days with all the BS going on, they have to expect some sort of validation...

So because I worked 3rd shift and I am tired beyond belief with red eyes and a bit disoriented they will try to charge me for smokin up before driving?
Impossible to know!!!

If I'm not mistaken, some places it is against the law to drive while over tired. You would be, teachnically, not in full control of your faculties. Many peole die each year from falling asleep at the wheel.

coffee shops are gay

LOL, credited. I was just pointing out that places that serve alcohol are often overrun with underage kids and kids with fake ID's. If you choose to hang out at these places, you have to expect police enforcement to be rampant. Comes with the territory. And if the cops make it their territory, you ain't gonna win. EOS.

wow, never heard of that. I must now look that up in the Mass laws,Wonder if it is in place here.

Why such a problem with the cops? They are only doing their jobs. They are more interested in whether the bar is adhering to the law than they are there for you, believe it or not. Don't be paranoid.

Any law enforcement officer will always present his id prior to asking for your Id.. If he does not then ask him for it...

Not all cops are 'just doing their jobs'... trust me. Besides that's the lamest and oldest excuse in the world... germany's armed forces during WWII were 'just doing their jobs' as well...

Unfortunatley, the occupation of being an armed authority figure with a license to incarcerate people attracts some really bad apples... people with some serious head issues. They screen for this specifically becuase they realize the type of miscreants they attract.

The lower in food chain your enforcement organization is, the more shit asses you have to accept, and on top of it - even the top echelon gets some REALLY bad pricks that are smart enough to breeze through any screening.

So to assume they are all innocents would be a mistake. Some law enforcement peeps run way more afoul of the law than citizens do... that's for sure. This isn't Wonderland, Alice.

if you are in a motor vehicle, yes, you must show your ID.
if you are just walking out in public, no you DO NOT have to show them your id! You still have to identify yourself (first, middle, last name, and birthdate) but you do not have to show them your ID. Of course they will say "let me see your ID" but you do not have to show it to them.

Of course they may try to arrest you anyway, even after you tell them who you are and they verify your picture on their computer, but whatever.

Its tough to decide when to stand up for your freedoms and when not to. Cops basically have the legal authority to fuck you over if you do something they dont like, even if what you are doing is perfectly legal. And they rarely pay for it.

This is why I hate cops, the power gets to their heads usually. But what can I say, we need them anyway, even if very few of them are good enough for the job.

I think a cop in a bar checking for underage drinkers can hardly be compared to the holocaust...lol.

watch out for the short cops. like the ones 5'6" and under. they have such horrible cases of little dog syndrome and will fuck you as much as they can

True that...

I just know plenty of cops that are up to no fucking good... trust me.... some of them are good freinds of mine! LMAO... not good.

yea, I made friends with cops back in my home town. Most weren't out to protect us. It was a job in demand, and it was easy to land. They do it for the money. Not all; but most.
