The thermostat is set on 76 and has been all day, but it's 80 degrees in the house. It's 100 degrees outside.

Should you get the ac serviced every year?

dunno, are you AC or DC.
Oh, wait, I didn't read the post, I just read the title.

Theoretically you should get it serviced, but I never have. I clean the unit & service the fan motor myself, but that's it.
The temp can vary a few degrees from what you have set, for several reasons; Faulty thermocouple, bad thermostat placement, vis-a-vis air circulation. It's not really an absolute, more like a relative setting. If you want it cooler, try lowering it & see if the temp goes down accordingly. Plus, the 100 deg outside may be a little much for your unit to handle.

man, you guys pizz me off. every year i'd be there, like Hank Hill telling you how for just $40 we will do a maintainence check on your ac unit. but nooooooooo, be cheap and wait till it breaks so i can be sitting in the goddam heat fixing your air cuz you need that 40 bones for pizza money.

Our air conditioner repairman at work told us that if you have an AC system with the usual BTU # for the volume of space you're trying to cool, getting more than a 20-degree differential between outside and inside temperatures is difficult. Furthermore, if you let it get hot inside, never set the thermostat for more than 4 degrees cooler than the present inside ambient temperature. Like, for example, if you've been away and turned the AC off, and you get home and it's 85 degrees inside and you want it to be 72, set it to 81 or 82 until it cools down that far, then set it down another 3-4 degrees, and so on and so forth.

The real trick to getting your home cooled down and keeping it cool is to not turn the AC off at night. If it's already cool inside in the morning when the temperature starts to rise, the system will have an easier time maintaining that temperature than if you let it get warm inside and then try to cool it off.

Thanks guys, big help!!!!!!!!!

I've got a coupon for maintenance check and I'm gonna call them. It didn't have a hard time maintaining the temp that I set, until it started getting real hot outside.
