Do birds fly for fun?

I was driving home yesterday and it was very windy. Halfway home I saw a huge hawk just flying on an updraft by a cliff. It got me to thinking, birds don't laugh or anything, do they have the ability to feel "fun"? It looked as though he was just flying around, not really looking for food to dive and get or anything, and I saw him for about 5 minutes from start to finish. He looked like he was having a ball. lol

Actually, that is a fascinating question. My gut feeling would be that yes, they sometimes do. I have not an ounce of proof of that, other than sometimes they just seem to fly around for no particular utilitarian purpose.

Do birds have to have a soul to enjoy an activity? I don't think so. I don't think they are mutually exclusive. I think dogs enjoy eating. Maybe birds enjoy flying.

????

Hard to say isn't it?

They probably look down on us from above wondering why the hell we move around on two legs all the time.

I doubt they wonder if we have souls and whether we enjoy walking, however...lol.

my wife had an interesting observation. She said that she thinks they do fly or "play" as most all animals display some sort of playing (like our 2 dogs for example) so maybe they don't think of it as play, but instinctualy they may enjoy certain behaviors we have defined as play. Smart gal she is.

I couldn't find seagulls, but it's a host of sparrows, a murder of crows, a pitying of doves, a flight of birds (general), a... crap, there's too many to list, lol.

What the heck's a dotterel?

Great question. I know I would. If I were to get bored I go flying or some shit. Never know what you might see, plus I bet it's fun - sort of like driving.
