Dizziness...

Yesterday afternoon I had one of those wanna'-barf-any-minute leg workouts...I did my squats first and went as heavy as I could go by myself w/no spotter and after every set, i was EXHAUSTED and got a bit dizzy for a slight second or two...was it because I was going heavy or that I just didn't eat enough carbs before my workout? Any suggestions???
Today, I am feelin' quite good, though...hurts like hell in a GREAT way!!!! :D

thx

At least for me, if I'm too low on carbs on leg day, I feel AWFUL. I've been dizzy a couple of times post heavy leg day. I sat and waited 10-15 minutes before even driving. Did you eat less than usual or eat different than usual pre workout?? I've figured out the hard way that it's really important for me to have a high carb intake on heavy days or else I feel crappy and don't feel like I'm working at my full potential.

Well, I didn't really eat that much before working out...
and I usually don't go as heavy as I did yesterday either because of the fact I don't have a workout partner...but seeing that I did good by myself, I will probably take it that heavy from now on...
I'm thinkin' I should up the carbs on heavy days though...

I did that EXACT same combo (heavier than usual weight and not enough food) a couple of weeks ago. I felt awful. Now I go out of my way to pay attention to what I'm eating on lifting days. It's thus far prevented me from feeling so sick.

It's awesome that you pushed yourself so hard though-- especially when you were feeling yucky. Nothing like walking around for a couple of days post leg lift being reminded of just how hard you pushed. I made the mistake of wearing 4 inch heels to work on Monday and just about died with unhappy leg syndrome. :lmao:

Maybe we all have to have this happen to teach us how important it is to fuel our bodies?? I'd say mess around with your carb levels and see how it goes.

CONGRATS!! u just had urself a killer workout!!:) i would say it was a combo of not eating enough food (carbs) and the heavy weight. make sure u dont eat too close to workout time. u need a little time to digest as well.

Not enough food + heavy lifting = dizzy!

I get a bit lightheaded nearly every workout.... yes, I know, I know - I try to eat more, I do... sucks ass not being able to eat enough. Unless you have A MEDICAL reason for not eating enough - EAT! DAMMIT!!!

:)

Well, eat it is...how long before a workout should you eat? An hour before or more?

Thanks to all the responses...mucho appreciated...;)

I think it's fairly normal to get dizzy when you are working such large muscle groups. It usually happens to me too and it has nothing to do with how much I've eaten or not eaten. I think because legs are such a large muscle group, when you are pushing them hard like that, a heck of a lot of blood is needed. So for a short time, the brain may not get quite enough oxygen cause it's all going to your legs.

Hm

Could be that your body did not get the nutrients it needed, perhaps the sun (if any) made you weeker after the workout??

Could it be that you are suffering from withdrawal symptoms form anything?

Just a thought

Not withdrawing from anything for sure...and it wasn't sunny here either...lol...i've come to the conclusion i just didn't eat enough food before...so now i'll be stuffin' my face (good stuff, of course) 1-2 hrs before my workout...:)

Isn't it possible to become dizzy from being dehydrated too? Also not warming up properly?

I used to just walk right in & start lifting... now I bike or walk (very low intensity) for just 5 minutes.. makes me feel like the blood is flowing, joints lubricated, etc.

Personally, if I'm doing cardio, I don't like any food for at least an hour before. Just lifting, I could have a small snack 30 min before & be OK (like 1/2 a protein bar of a piece of bread).

Don't expect to eat an hour before a workout and have ample muscle glycogen to support a hard workout. If you lift late in the day, you can rely on the fuel you have taken in throughout the day. If you lift early in the day, you may have to rely on what you ate the evening before to support the workout.

Your fuel is very important as you know. You would not make a 1000 mile trip without filling up with gas, so why expect your body to do any different without stalling?

I only speak from experience as it was way embarrassing the day I collapsed in the gym after a HEAVY leg/cardio workout when I did not fuel up (my low carb day).

Just my .02!!

it looks like hypoglycemia

some more carbs the day before (to replenish your glycogen)
and some food (not high GI though) during workout may help for intensive working days

Damn , i got alot to learn lol
I've never really paid that much attention to what i ate the nite before, but i usually train in the evenings tho so i guess i don't notice it that much !
