Why should I fear God?

Just as a child gets to the point where he/she is no longer in "physical fear" of that parent, shouldn't we be past that point in our evolution?

Should we not instead try to live our lives so that WE will be happy and appreciate the gifts that we were given (herein lies the respect part)instead of consuming ourselves with our neighbors.... especially if that neighbor has never done anything to hurt us?
