Dislocated Shoulder....

New member
Hi everyone. I suffered a dislocated shoulder May 31st after slipping & falling downhill while hiking. I am still wearing a sling to immobilize the shoulder. I start rehab at a physiotherapy centre on June 24th.

Anyone know how effective the rehab can be in regards to returning effectively to activities like bodybuilding and grappling? Is surgery going to be inevitable if I want to return to these sports?

Thanks for any info.

Surgery is not required if you have proper rehab. Hell, i had numerous dislocations of both shoulders and never had any proper rehab and I do just fine with lifting, except for a few movements (anything over and behind the head is tough i.e. behind the neck OHP, overhead tri-extensions, skull crushers, etc)

Dont jump back into anything heavy before you're ready. You are at high risk for re-injuring/re-dislocating.

Do the rehab, and do it right.

I blew out my left shoulder back when I was 15-16 while skating. I neglected it.. For a full year it just got worse and worse...so bad it would pop out if my arm was hanging straight down while jumping.

I finally did the surgery and never followed through past the first 3 days of therapy. I can't squat 10 years later because my left arm doesn't have the flexibility to hold the bar up. Slight imbalance of muscle size in my traps, shoulders, and lats.. Due to my shoulder being weak, my left trap, delt, and lats pick up a lot of the slack. I'm actually stronger at pulling from the left, but much stronger at pushing from the right.

Do your therapy, if you must do your surgery, but do the therapy again.
