In the short story, “The secret life of Walter Mitty,” a very disparate character called Walter Mitty, is introduced to us. Throughout this story, Walter Mitty is portrayed as being very forgetful, really stubborn, easily distracted, and maybe even a wonderer. Walter Mitty has an ostentatious imagination. The story even gives the impression that fantasizing is what Walter knows to do best. Walter Mitty is unquestionably an older man. I’d presume that he is in his late 60’s or early 70’s. From substantiation in the story it is evident that Walter leads two different and contrasting lives. In his real life, he is a placid, quiet man who is easily bossed around and taken advantage of by his belligerent wife. On the other hand, he sustains a composed, imperturbable behavior in his fantasies and plays the role of a confident man who has the respect of many people. Most of the story is focused around Walter Mitty’s day dreaming and his wife, Mrs. Mitty, plays an important role in the revelation of Walter’s characteristics. Walter Mitty suffers under his domineering and controlling wife. This shows his character to be somewhat similar to that of a puppet’s. He therefore escapes Mrs. Mitty and his humdrum life by daydreaming. He may also day dream because he finds his life to be mind-numbing and unchallenging simply because he does not have anything constructive to occupy his time. ...
