I have ATT digital broadband and I wanna switch to Direct TV due to several reason.
1. As of now I pay $51 for a bronz package that doesnt even have teh HBO or Cinemax channel(I have to pay $13 more to get those)
2.Direct TV is $40
3.ATT got so greedy that they offer HBO or CInemax only if you have digital ATT as opposed to regular cable;before I used to get HBO only thru analog cable

Question:
THose who have Direct TV: Do you guys need a second receiver for a second Tv in order to get different channels at the same time?
How much does it cost?

My wife and I just switched from AT&T Digital Cable to Direct TV. AT&T's billing process is fucked. That is the exact reason I cancelled.

Direct TV has several packages. We selected 2 receivers, local channels and all the HBO channels. Yes, you have to pay extra for the second receiver. (My wife did all the setting up with them, so I don't know the exact cost. But it's really not that much for the second one.)

Difference in cost between the package we had with AT&T and the one we have now with DirectTV is almost exactly the same. Right around $50/month. All the same channels, too. DirectTV also comes and installs for free.

I would not have switched if it wasn't for AT&T's billing process.

To be rid of AT&T's fucked billing practices, yes. But as far as what you get for options, to me, it's a wash. I think the costs will come out very close to the same. That's what my wofe noticed, anyway.

I had to pay monthly for each receiver for Digital Cable anyway. (Like .65 or so, but still......)

AS of now I pay $51 but no HBO...With HBO would be like $64...

So I guees you got a better deal if you pay $51 with HBO included...

Yeah, our cost is gonna be right around that. Between $50-60 a month. But closer to $50, I think.

Not to bad.

I know that the instalation and the dish is free , but I was wondering what are the consequences if you decide to cancel the Direct Tv subscription.

Did you have to sign up for one year contract like phone campanies that give you a free phone?

I'm not aware of anything like that. I'm pretty sure my wife would have mentioned that to me if that was the case. But, sounds like it's worth looking into.

Hi Joker,
Some reply that makes sense...
Are you aware of this:

"HBO/Cinemax are only on digital now because it was mandated by the FCC, not because of ATT's greediness. ALL Television channels will be on digital by 2005 due to a bill that was passed by the clinton administration.

What are you really gonna get with direct TV for $40? They'll advertise like 120 channels, but 40 of those are pay-per view, and another 30 are music channels. so that means you'll get like maybe 50 channels that you can actually watch shows on. That's about half of the channels you're getting right now with your bronze.

And to answer your question, yes, you need to get a second receiver to watch different channels on a second tv. Not to mention the extra receiver programming fees that direct tv doesn't tell you about. Plus they charge extra for local channels. so your bill won't be $40/month, it'll be more like $50 at the bottom line. If you want HBO or cinemax, you'll pay even more. Make sure you read all the fine print on those advertisements.

Plus you have to sign a 1 year contract, which means if you try it out and don't like it, you're screwed. It's like $200 to break the contract. Oh, and I hope you don't have any bad weather in your area (heavy winds or rain), cause that'll totally f**k up your satellite reception. Not to mention putting that ugly thing on the roof of your house.

My advice: Stick with cable. If you want HBO, call and ask if they have any specials on the silver package, which has HBO and Starz (in my area it's on sale for $54.99 right now)."

PS>Extra charges for receiver programming fees???

AT&T seems to have a habit of adding more to the bill than necessary.

My cell phone plan from AT&T is $69.99 a month... bill comes in at about $92 a month with all their "extra" charges and 50 thousand taxes.

Don't get me started on how much i pay when i go over my minutes.
