Different dead lift style

I was at the gym the other day, and this guy was doing deadlifts a whole lot different than what I am used to seeing. He was decent sized and looked like he knew what he was doing, so I don't know if it's a different style or what.

He was bending the knees about the same amount has most deadlifters, but he would have his back absolutely flat parellel to the floor just like a straight leg dead. His back was straight as could be, but I didn't think you were supposed to go absolutely parellel. When I do deads my back is straight and everything, but it's probably about 45 degrees from the floor instead of 0 like him.

I'm not sure what the point of doing it like that would be, since it would severely limit the amount of weight that could be handled safely, foregoing a lot of the whole leg/body benefits of heavy deads. And any benefits for back/hamstring development that that style would offer could be accomplished with good mornings or SLDLs. Seems like the worst of both worlds to me.

I don't know. His arms may have been really short because he wasn't a tall guy at all...maybe 5'9". The best I can explain was that it was half straight leg dead and half regular.

Did it look like this? http://marunde-muscle.com/videos/RDL600_3.mpg

This guy's a "world's strongest man" competitor and here he's doing Romanian Deads w/ 600x3. Serious muscle!

Hmm, I do my RDL's different, I have my knees slightly bent and keep them locked as I push my hips back.

That looks more like a deadlift from the rack like Ms. BH says, although Jesse Marunde can call them anything he wants :)

I do a lot of deads with my pinky on the power rings. Feels different. More of a lat spread, grip workout, and much harder.
