Diet While Traveling?

Hey Everybody -

Just wanted everyone's opinion/advice on something...

I travel 3-4 days per week for work, which is a complete pain in the ass and I absolutely hate that it keeps me away from my 2 daughters for the better part of the week, but hey, that's another topic for another time... :)

Anyway, when I'm at home my diet is extremely clean, 3 protein shakes per day, etc., but with my travel schedule it's extremely hard to eat anywhere near as well as I do when I'm working from home. I stick carry RTD protein shakes and try to eat as healthy as possible, but when I'm leaving a hotel for an airport at 5:30am or driving home at midnight, sometimes I feel like I have no choice but to eat the fucking poisonous garbage they sell as most restaurants nowadays.

Just curious what the other traveling members of EF do to keep their diet clean on the road and still meet their caloric/protein intake requirements.

Thanks in advance for everyone's input!

Buy yourself a George foreman grill, and a blender. As far as fridge room store your uncooked chicken, pasteurized egg whites and vegtables in there. Get canned tuna, instant cook oatmeal, bananas, brown rice, potatoes(dice them up throw them into a bowl full of water and microwave till cooked.) Also some frozen fruits to throw in the blender, and put 250ml of egg whites in with it and and bit of milk and blend that up and theres your shake!

Appreciate the advice Bro, I have a small blender I'm going to start carrying with me.

What about times when I'm not in my hotel room, i.e. rotting at the airport, driving, etc.?

Fortunately the Pittsburgh airport has a GNC inside, but most airports have nothing but fucking McDonald's and Cinnabon or whatever it's called.

I've seen many restaurants inside airports that serve chicken breasts, and rice. It may be a bit more expensive, but if it comes down to eating mcdonalds, shit food is better then no food at all.

get a real good cooler bag some good big ice packs and prep and package your food. I used to be on the road 5+ days at a time or even just 2-3days at a time. for short trips i had a cooler bag that I would load up with cooked chicken, turkey, wraps, veggies, and cheese. I would bring protein powder with me and buy milk or just use water.

I also would order exactly what i needed to eat not what was convenient or on the menu. salads are easy just get dressing on the side or ask for oil/vinegar. fajitas are good, burgers are good, steak is good.

you can make it work.

Good Luck

yeah it can be tough but you have to be slick about things. like in a restaurant order a chicken salad with no dressing.. (the dressing they have is horrible).. maybe some steamed veggies (tell them no salt or flavoring), and some brown rice if possible.

or order a steak but make sure it isn't marinaded in anything bad. (a lot of places with marinate with fried animal fat, yeah thats why you get a stomach ache after eating it)

at airports grab some nuts or eat at a sit down restaurant... if you do get stuck eating crap and have no choice then keep your portions small.. when i was in jamaica there were no restaurants and my flight left in 3 hours so i had to eat something. so i ordered a pizza, but i had a small portion. don't eat the whole portion!

I travel often for my job as well , and I try to eat only steak and chicken breasts in restaurants! It's tough especially when you are meeting with clients and trying to eat every 4 hours a day ! Tom and Sterolizer have great ideas with packing a cooler and a George Foreman grill! I think Steve travels like I do as well and he has a valid point of staying away from the junk and more importantly the processed foods! It's definitely challenging however just seek out healthy meals and use the advice these good members have set forth for you and you will be fine! Good luck to you and have a great day!

Thanks for everyone's input...

I'll tell you what, there are several forums that I visit during the day, and EF is the ONLY one that I post on. Most forums are full of 13 year old punks who weren't hugged enough as children, trolling and starting fights for their own amusement.

I get that EF has a few of these too, but I have never had a negative contributor to one of my threads and it's the ONLY forum that I've ever visited that is full of positive, helpful people who in addition to their willingness and desire to help others, actually appear to be contributing members of society rather then just a cancer to those around them.

This forum kick ass and although I've only belonged for a few months, the generosity of EF members and mods is humbling and inspires me to do the same for those around me.

This may sound cheesy, but oh well, it needed to be said. :)
