alrite my pops is about 20lbs overweight so i have him on a little test diet...

i had him for his breakfast drink a MRP with 42g's of protein and low to moderate amounts of carbs i told him if hes going to have carbs to have it for his morning meal...then i told hi mto have a moderate lunch, and then maybe inbetween lunch and dinner or after dinner to have a double scoop of whey protein (no carbs in this stuff like 3 g's) 40g's total

how much pro a day should someone like him have?
cals ? carbs? hes about 225# 5'11"

what would you fellaz reccomend for someone who doesnt workout and trying to loose the weight....

thanks, any other info you might need just ask...

later, dankduke

Don't drink meal replacements, and perhaps add only one extra meal during the day and make lunch a bit smaller. Lots of meals may just annoy him and it really makes no difference for him. Reduce starches significantly because insulin sensitivity will be much lower for a non-athlete. Eat lots of tasty protein sources like steak. Eat lots of veggies, some fruit, and a limited amount of starches like maybe 1/2 a sweet potato for an early meal. Run a caloric deficit.

Tell him to go for a walk in the morning or something. Maybe go with him if you live near/with him. That will help in direct and indirect ways. Probably burn at extra 100 or 200 calories per day, too.

His maintainance calories is around 3000. Idealy thee should be a 500 calorie defecit. My pops is in the same boat, i just put him on the atkins for a few weeks. He got the o.k from his doctor. Better for me in on CKD he can buy allmy food now........

If he wants to drop weight fast Atkins is good for those who do not train. Walking 3 times a week would be a great help also.

Otherwise just cut the carbs low and stay under 2500 cals and low fat and hell loose.

If he eats any starches, have him eat it with some steak or other meat. This will prevent post-carb-consumption hunger. The biggest issue is calorie control.

Atkins would be great since he doesn't train and it suppresses appetite. Its not necessary, though, and some people get freaked out by it.

can i get more info on the atkins diet and specifics on it at a website so i can send it to him...

also why not an MRP whats wrong with that as his breakfast meal...

why do you reccomend steak when its a fatty food...

Meal replacements can spike blood sugar / insulin and cause post-carb-consumption hunger. It also does not satisfy most peoples' appetites. Why have maltodextrin when you can eat a piece of fruit or some oatmeal? Why have protein powder when you can have eggs?

Steak contains fat but is very satisfying and seems to give me and a lot of other people energy. If carbs are limited, steak is fine. The issue is calorie control more than anything else. If more carbs are eaten, then leaner protein should probably be eaten. However, I think he should limit carbs due to his lack of intense physical activity.

No need to follow any specific plan for an atkins diet. Just limit carbs and eat lots of protein and fat containing foods with tons of veggies. Carbs can still be consumed in moderation (maybe 50-100g), as the brain uses a lot of carbs. Run a caloric deficit (which is inherent due to the appetite suppressing effect of protein, fat and fibrous veggies) and presto. Most people like eating meat and veggies.

plv so you think the mrp in the morning is a bad idea???
Well, any diet with limited calories will work. If he likes meal replacements and it works then that is definitely ok. It isn't very nutritious or insulin-controlling, though.
