i drink 4 quarts of water a day but when i come home at the end of the day i watch tv and drink Diets cokes usually 3-4 a day. is that bad?

You'll get different opinions on this one. I don't think it's bad, if you can handle caffeine that late at night and if your diet isn't loaded with sodium. Diet coke doesn't have much sodium, so a couple a day won't kill you. If it helps you stick to your diet, then by all means, drink it.

I'm with JJ on this one.

Sometimes I just need the taste of something sweet to make me feel better.

Three or four, one after the other is a bit much for my taste, but probably ok health wise. The only thing you might consider is, and I just read about this recently, is the effect of carbonated drinks on protein absorbtion. Apparently the carbonation has an adverse effect on that. So if it were only one or two a day, I wouldn't even worry about it. But three or four? It might be worth your time to read up on.

Any idea where you saw this? I'd be curious to read it.

I suggest you cut down to 1 or 2 cans, diet coke make cause cancer, especially in large doses. The carbonation can screw up your stomach, making it harder to absorb protein, the sodium amount is pretty small. I've read several articles on this, I wish I could give you the sources, anyway listen to gymtime.

I usually have 2-3 a day. It's either that or water for me usually. I should probably just stick with water, but oh well. :)

Diet Coke is the shiznit. I drink 3-4 cans/day. Hey, there are worse things to be addicted to...

soda and protein

The carbonation in all soft drinks causes calcium loss in the bones through a three-stage process:

1. The carbonation irritates the stomach.
2. The stomach "cures" the irritation the only way it knows how. It adds the only antacid at its disposal: calcium. It gets this from the blood.
3. The blood, now low on calcium, replenishes its supply from the bones. If it did not do this, muscular and brain function would be severely impaired.

But, the story doesn't end there. Another problem with most soft drinks is they also contain phosphoric acid (not the same as the carbonation, which is carbon dioxide mixed with the water). This substance also causes a drawdown on the store of calcium.

So, soft drinks soften your bones (actually, they make them weak and brittle) in three ways:

1. Carbonation reduces the calcium in the bones.
2. Phosphoric acid reduces the calcium in the bones.
3. The beverage replaces a calcium-containing alternative, such as milk or water. Milk and water are not excellent calcium sources, but they are sources.
