Did Arnold ever "bulk"?

Never really seen him with a bulky pic, he has always had abs and a fairly low bodyfat. Maybe he just never released bulked up pictures?

Yeah, watch Pumping Iron...none of those guys are ever out of shape.

I think the blowing up to 300 lbs off-season only happened within the past 10 years? Anyone?

Everyone talks about bulking and cutting on elite, but I think maybe for our reasons we can just bulk moderately and not gain too much fat. I mean realistically, there are only very few people here that can stand next to the "old school" crowd.

Sk, this troubles me too. They were able to get huge, keep a very low bodyfat, and never do cardio. And you always hear about, and see pics of them eating whole eggs, whole milk, ground beef by the truckload, and home made shakes made with egg and milk powder, with some extra raw eggs for kicks.

How did they do it?! LOL

Ps. Sk, we should talk some time. We are always posting about this stuff and about the old school crowd. I think our goals are probably very similiar.

I've got this pic of him on the 1970sbodybuilding group at yahoo where he looks pretty bulky.

Just go to groups at yahoo and type in 1970sbodybuilding , go to the picture section.

I can definitely notice the difference between pictures of arnold in the off season and pictures of him when he was in contest shape. In the "off season" or whenever he wasnt preparing for a contest he isnt as vascular or cut as he is in the pictures taken around the time of the contest.

You can tell a difference, but Arnold obviously never got fat at all... just put on a little extra bf in the off season.

Sure bro, shoot me a pm anytime. :)

It's interesting that I never heard the word bulk in his encyclopedia, and I read pretty much all of it. Maybe I missed something?

Yeah he didn't explicity mention bulking.

I think the old guys just took it as common sense that if they needed to get bigger in the off season they would have to eat more and would thereby put on a certain amount of fat.

They kept it reasonable though and so probably didn't lose much muscle when they had to diet down for a contest.

I've read some where that arnold was quoted as saying he'd rather haveto put 40 pounds of muscle on than loose 40 pounds during the off season. He drops a good amount of weight and gets a little flat during the off season

Main reason being is the same as why you don't see piglet pictures of Dorian Yates. They had good work ethic and they stayed in shape pretty much year around.

I am a fan of Lee Priest as well, but when you see his off season doughboy pic's, it's quite disturbing.

Arnold was bulky in his younger days, until he lost to frank zane. Thank he got lean and cut.

From reading about Arnold, he pretty much trained 6 months for the Olympia each year. Keep in mind that the Olympia really was one of just a few contests each year.

Judging from what I have seen, Arnold would start his cycle 6 months out, peak his bulk at 3 months out and begin to refine his body. I know that he would take as much as a month off after the Olympia.
