Holey, Franklin is the man.

How did Arvloski look? Hes got some mean skills!
Totally dominated Eilers. The fight was only ~4 minutes long because Eilers blew out his knee, but in those 4 minutes Arlovski lit him up pretty bad. Completely one-sided (like Tanner/Franklin).

I know I'm no great fighter or anything
and I've been training relativly short period of time and just about anybody that was on the card would kick my ass w/out putting forth that much effort BUT I have to say I noticed two things that just had to make me laugh

in Tanner vs Franklin I believe it was, Tanner shot in again and again and each time he got stuffed (it was like a half a Guiolltine but wasn't really a sub attempt so I just call it a stuffed shoot even tho it's not really that either)
and he just kept trying it again and again
if you want to go to the ground FINE but if the shoot fails like five times, don't try a sixth ok...

and in another match a Judo guy vs a BJJ guy (sorry can't recall names) the BJJ guy went to the Judo guy to Clinch with him, and wound up on his ass or back every time
and he kept going in to do it again....

what the hell

I have to wait for it to come out on dvd, but those are some good pics of the fight. Tanner has been looking good, but the pics look like he got schooled big time in this one. Can't wait to see it. hopefully netflix will pick it up soon.

Well, his stand-up game certainly wasn't working so what should he have done? Just given up completely and left the ring? If Tanner felt he would've fared better on the ground, why should he give up on trying to take it there?

Also, Franklin was blocking Tanner shoot attempts... he sprawled back and kept his arms in to prevent Tanner from reaching in.

Karo Parisyan and Matt Serra. Judo is all about takedowns so of course he's (Parisyan) going to be skilled in that area... Serra would go into the clinch and do his best to avoid one takedown, but Parisyan would just come back with a different one. Plus, towards the end, Serra was gassed so he couldn't do much of anything.

try and pay attention now
the basic shoot wasn't working for Tanner
he needed to try a different takedown or to cover his takedown attempt with something, he didn't cover his shoot, nor did he try a Clinch takedown nor did
he kept trying it and it didn't work
so it was a bad idea he should have tried something different (just as Joe Rogan...)

and that's the freaking point, Judo is about takedowns, especially from the Clinch so Clinching with the Judoka is only going to work if you can avoid his takedowns/throws after so many throws you should be able to learn that Clinching with this guy is a bad idea
the other guy just didn't learn he just kept going in to the Clinch
he and Tanner should have reversed ideas
Tanner should have tried to work a Clinch takedown and Serra should have tried a shoot or anything other then going to the Clinch
it wouldnt' be so bad if Parisyan had been too good at getting to the Clinch but most of the time Serra was the one that went in to get the Clinch!

Man....I tell yah, Tanner took a beating on his face. Respect to him for taking all that and not going down.

That was a sweet right he threw near the start; Franklin dropped like a sack of hammers, but kudos to him for getting up quick. He pretty much walked away from that fight unscathed.

It'll be interesting to see Franklin coach the next season of The Ulimate Fighter.

I agree. Season 2 should be way better with Randy Cotoure making up the challenges.
Maybe they will find some decent competition for Andre Arvloski in the Heavy wieght division.

franklin looked like a pussy to me, he was throwing to many jabs(standing almost sidewards so they wher even weaker)not even solid puches and tanner wasnt doing the clinch and kness which he's good at. boring fight imo

Wait, you're saying Tanner should've worked the clinch? You're serious? I'm guessing you didn't see Franklin in UFC 50.

And you think Serra would've been able to shoot in on Parisyan? Jeez.

UFC 53 was pretty good overall... worth the money I guess. One comment: UFC is really weak in the heavyweight division. Arlovski is very good, Silvia is good, and after that they pretty much suck. Eilers was basically a punching bag. I know all the talk is about Arlovski fighting Mir, but I hate watching Mir fight.. yeah he is good on the ground, but is a very boring fighter. I think the Pride heavyweights are way better than UFC. Crocop, Fedor, Noguirea, etc., those guys are exciting to watch. Just my .02.

Cmon man, he put a beating on tanner pretty good, and the jab is a set-up punch and a punch designed to keep the opponent (in this case a better groundworker) at bay, franklin fought the fight he needed to win. By no means a pussy.

I agree. My fantasy is that the best in the UFC regularly fight against the best of Pride. It will never happen, but I can dream.

I think Arvloski could hang with Prides heavyweights but thats about it.

I was thinking the same thing as I wrote that post. The only UFCers I can think of off the top of my head that fought Pride fights (Mark Coleman, Kev Randleman, Chuck Liddell) were all beaten by established Pride fighters. Although Andrei has declared loyalty to the UFC, I'd love to see him in a Pride Grand Prix.

Out of those 3 Mark Coleman was the most successful in Pride. He won the heavy wieght grand prix in 2001 i believe.
Vitor Belfort has fought there too. He was eliminated in this years grand prix in the first round by Allistair Overeem.

yah his Jab was a bit odd
it was like he was sidewas and leaning down to throw the jab up almost
it was wierd

?
doing what they did lost them the fights, trying something different would have been better
and what I actually said was to do SOMETHING different
if Tanner wanted a takedown and shooting wasn't working he should have COVERED his shoot attempt or tried a Clinch takedown instead of repeatedly trying something that even Joe Rogan saw wasn't working

same thing with Serra, if he wanted to get to the ground Shooting would have been ab etter way then Clinching with a Judoka who puts you on your ass every time you come in to Clinch...

I agree bigtime. The heavy weight division in the UFC is drying up. There is a lot going on in the pride HW division. Spectacular talent there. I can't remeber who it was that beat Sapp with an arm bar. Sapp was tapping like a little girl. Perfect fight to prove that mass and power isn't everything!

Eilers was a soup can for Arlovsky. They want to make Arlovsky look good for the eventual retun of Frank Mir. I am amazed Eilers was even considered. His last fight he got knocked out by a fat Mexican from El Paso in his first UFC fight. Paul Buanatello.

That was Antonio Noguera. Before the armbar Sapp was slamming him around like a gorilla.
