I guess. So long as you get the rest of your complex carbs and protein. But coke wouldnt be my choice of things to drink post workout.bruce410 said:so i could just drink a coke after a workout since weight gain is not an issue

bruce410 said:okay i get back from the gym and i take down 55gs of protein and about 40gs of carbs. what besides some dex is a good way to get that sugar.
Outtlaw said:I use to use it. Still have some around so I might go back to it. But after messing with slin all kinds of different ways, I dont think its that important anymore. I think you need carbs post workout along with protein, some of which should fast acting, but I think any simple sugar will do.... doesnt have to be dextrose.
Joe Stenson said:It really depends why you're arguing for it's use. Aside from illiciting a large insulin spike, which can be beneficial for maximum protein synthesis, it doesn't really serve any purpose. One of the main reasons proponents of its use always provide is that it "quickly restores glycogen stores". However, they never mention the relevance of this, which is really quite low. Unless you are planning on doing another workout a few hours after you just finished one, who cares? It's not like you won't be eating carb-containing meals before your next session. Your glycogen stores will get replenished eventually, timing is of little importance.
And speaking of timing issues, if you are really that concerned with this quick glycogen replenishment, remember dextrose still takes time to be digested. It's what you eat BEFORE the workout that's going to be getting put to use directly after the workout.
So, at this point it seems as though you may as well take it; it's not harming you and it might help with protein synthesis. This is where you have to remember dextrose is just SUGAR...think long term, this can't be a healthy practice.
Before I get jumped all over, let me say this: One can use dextrose if one wants, it's just not necessary, and I really disagree with people preaching that it is.
Wow, I think I might actually agree with Stenson for the 1st time.Joe Stenson said:It really depends why you're arguing for it's use. I agree with this to some extent. What I do is make a large dextrose/maltodextrin/whey isolate shake PRE WORKOUT. By large I mean 60g protein and 60-70 carbs. I then drink a little before, and keep drinking a little between sets, by the time my workout is finished its about 2/3 gone and I down it. My workouts and recovery have never been better since I started doing it this way.Joe Stenson said:It really depends why you're arguing for it's use.
