Detour Protein Bars

everyone is posting different results...some show that the label is right on...others show it is way off....

i eat them once and a while and will believe the label on this one...i have had 2 of there products tested and they were always right on the money.....

Ok, I just tried a Detour bar. They taste good at first, but after I tasted the caramel part, the rest of the bar had a mealy texture and a bad after taste. My favorite is still Mesotech Cookies & Creme. I consider all bars as "candy with protein".

From what I've heard, they are not label accurate. I also heard that every Detour will be different because of the amount of peanuts that are in each one. (that seemed rather stupid to me)
Now that last comment came from a lady from Next Proteins(or is it Next Nutrition) but it still sounded silly to me. She also did say that the bars did not meet lable claims when tested but the new batches will have to meet them. So, who knows. Anyone try their new U-Turn bar? It really is too bad that they don't meet their claims cuz they are really yummy, knew they were too good to be true!

Let's look at the ingredients:

Other Ingredients: Designer Whey Protein Blend (Whey Protein Concentrate, Hydrolyzed Whey Protein, PDUF whey protein isolate), water, GLYCERLEAN (99.7% USP Glycerine, L-Leucine, L-Taurine, CLA), Chocolate Coating (Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated palm kernel Oil, nonfat dry milk solids, cocoa powder processed with alkali, whole milk solids, soy lecithin, natural flavor, salt, artificial flavor), Peanuts, caramel, soy protein isolate, gelatin, calcium caseinate, inulin, peanut flavor, rice flour, salt, Sucralose(Splenda Blend), potassium sorbate.

I've bolded the issue with this bar and with most other bars. Gelatin has a protein value, but is not a complete protein - by a long shot. Calcium caseinate is another crap protein - poor amino acid profile. The other one to look out for is collagen - basically, ground up bone (just check the label for the Triple Decker bar). YUM! At least this bar has a little whey protein isolate - but probably just a little. I would not rely on these "protein" bars as a protein source; if you're in a bind, it's better than a candy bar, but that's it.

I'll agree with that. The u-turn doesn't 'claim' to have as much protein and I don't think it tastes as good. :)

Wouldn't you rather have protein sources high in essential amino acids and easily soluble? Collagen is very low in essential amino acids:

Here's more on gelatin/collagen:

"Gelatin, a product that is generally categorized as a hydrocolloid stabilizer, comes from the hydrolysis of collagen, an insoluble animal protein. Most food gelatin is type A, an acid extraction typically from pork skins. Some type B, or alkaline-hydrolyzed product also is used. "

I'm conceding (admiting I'm wrong) on the calcium caseinate - I was told it didn't have all the essential aminos, but from what I can find, it does. The primary difference between caseinates and whey is caseinates absorb slower than whey:

"Researchers have coined the terms "fast protein" and "slow protein" to indicate proteins that are digested rapidly and slowly, respectively. Whey protein is a fast protein. Casein on the other hand is a slow protein.

Research comparing the two proteins show that they have very different effects on protein metabolism. (Boirie Y, Dangin M, Gachon P, Vasson MP, Maubois JL, Beaufrere B. Slow and fast dietary proteins differently modulate postprandial protein accretion. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1997 Dec 23;94(26):14930-5) Whey protein causes a dramatic but short increase of plasma amino acids (hyperaminoacidemia). Casein causes a prolonged plateau of moderate increase in plasma amino acids, due to slower gastric emptying, and perhaps its amino acid profile.

This difference in the rate and duration of increased plasma amino acids has different effects on protein breakdown as well as synthesis. Whole body protein breakdown was inhibited by 34% after casein ingestion but not after whey ingestion. Postprandial (after digestion) protein synthesis was stimulated by 68% with the whey meal and about 31% with the casein.

Now it is important to note that protein breakdown is different from protein oxidation. Protein breakdown can result in amino acid recycling without significant losses of nitrogen whereas protein oxidation is just amino acids going up in smoke (in the liver) before they even get into the blood stream.

Whey and casein have different affects on protein oxidation. Postprandial whole body leucine oxidation over 7 hours was lower with casein (272 ± 91 µmol·kg1) than with whey (373 ± 56 µmol·kg1). Leucine intake was identical in both meals (380 µmol·kg1). Therefore, net leucine balance over the 7 hours after the meal was more positive with casein than with whey. In other words, although casein did not elicit such a dramatic increase in protein synthesis, by the end of the day it had resulted in greater protein deposition than did the whey. This is because the rapid increase in plasma amino acids caused by the whey resulted in equally dramatic increases in protein oxidation.

The only reason I couldn’t agree with your bedtime protein plan 100% is that it would be even better simply to use whole protein foods, particularly meat, rather than a protein drink. Something like beef or chicken will digest even slower than casein or whey. So if you really want amino acids being released all throughout the night, pick a protein source that will sit like a rock in your stomach and take a few hours to digest."

Detour Scam

I work at GNC part time and the detour was just put on recall because of way out label claims on fat / protien/carbs.

It was too good to be true I heard numbers like 18 grams of protien 18 fat and way too many carbs but that was just rumors, but they were recalled because of wrong label claims.

You know FF, I really like MesoTech's Cookies and creme. I was running one day to the gym and didn't eat lunch due to scheldule. I grabed one by a fluke, i usually liked the "balance carmel one" and i took a bite and was stunned! it's sooo tasty! As far as Detour bars, i couldn't find them at a resonable price in the stores, onlt on the internet, so i had to wait, they ar pretty good too (big fan of carmel) but couldn't help but feel quilty eating the HUGE protein bar. :(

I had an experience where I ran out of my protein shakes for 2 weeks so I bought nitrotech bars "the low carb ones" instead. I don't know if their labels were right or wrong but I went from losing fat about 1 lb / week on the shakes and having a standstill with the bars. As soon as the shakes came back i lost fat again. I steer clear of bars unless I'm in a pickle.

I bought a few of these recently, and so did my bf: his and mine were sitting there on my counter and I noticed something weird. His said 30 grams of protein on them, and mine said 32 grams of protein. There were other discrepancies on the labels too, although the basic look and packaging was the same.

Very weird.

I also think it's pretty funny that their boxes say something to the effect that they have 125% less fat than regular candy bars. The fact that they could write something so obviously untrue really makes me question everything else about them.

I'll check for the exact wording at the store on the way home today.
