With reports that 18 U.S. soldiers and 600 insurgents have been killed in the battle for Fallujah, the strategic intent of the invasion seems to have been thwarted. Insurgents have been rampaging through nearby Mosul, “attacking or setting fire to at least seven police stations as well as government buildings.” The civilian death toll has been heavy with residents saying that “scores of civilians have been killed or wounded” in the 24 hours following the arrival of U.S. led forces on Monday.

The Pentagon is claiming that the assault is evidence of how well it has trained the new Iraqi Army. Scott Ritter, he of weapon’s inspection fame, makes the point that “there is today only one effective unit, the 36th Battalion” in the fight in Fallujah. But it turns out that it is a Kurdish, not an Arab battalion, hence their willingness to fight.
