Deli Meat = High Sodium

Whats up guys. In order to get my maximum protein input everyday I end up eating 18oz(spread out over three meals) of Sliced chicken from the DELI. The reason I do this is where i'm at, and what i do does'nt allow me to Cook chicken on the stove. Well for a 2oz serving of the chicken it is 500mg of Sodium. So for 9 servings of that it would be 4500mg of sodium a day, just from chicken. Is this amount to high? Any alternatives to Sliced chicken? thanks

Yes that's high - recommended maximum's vary from 2-5 grams.

Also many protein sources are high - e.g., fish and egg whites, dairy.

However, to be honest I don't know how much to care about this - I put salt on everything, eat stacks of fish, and have had my salt levels checked every year of salt and they're fine (I don't eat deli meat or bacon though, i.e., the particularly high sodium foods). I assume that given most of us here do lots of exercise, an above average level of salt is excreted through sweat.

Of course, if you are overweight, have high cholestoral or blood pressure you should say NO to the deli meat. Otherwise, if you are concerned just get your salt levels checked, or stay away from the deli meat (which I should point out is preserved with harmful nitrates and sulfates)
