Deca vs. oxandrolone vs.Test-E on bodyfat composition...

Found yet another study I believe is on the interesting side:
Different steroidal analogues(Oxandrolone,Nandrolone,Testosterone Enanthate) going head to head as combatants of fat production/storage...Worth noting is oxandrolone's SUPERIORITY over test and deca in visceral and abdominal fat depletion.Ox also carried some negative sides-cholesterol scale tipping to an unfavorable balance,T-3 &T-4 suppression,as well as T levels dropping slightly.Deca was actually able to REVERSE the cholesterol scale back to a favorable position,as well as reverse suppression of thyroid hormonal output(maybe a need to stack deca and oxandrolone together?)Enjoy folks... :)

Oral anabolic steroid treatment, but not parenteral androgen treatment, decreases abdominal fat in obese, older men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of testosterone enanthate (TE), anabolic steroid (AS) or placebo (PL) on regional fat distribution and health risk factors in obese middle-aged men undergoing weight loss by dietary means. DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, carried out for 9 months with primary assessments at 3 month intervals. Due to adverse blood lipid changes, the AS group was switched from oral oxandrolone (ASOX) to parenteral nandrolone decaoate (ASND) after the 3 month assessment point. SUBJECTS: Thirty healthy, obese men, aged 40-60 years, with serum testosterone (T) levels in the low-normal range (2-5 ng/mL). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Abdominal fat distribution and thigh muscle volume by CT scan, body composition by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), insulin sensitivity by the Minimal Model method, blood lipids, blood chemistry, blood pressure, thyroid hormones and urological parameters. RESULTS: After 3 months, there was a significantly greater decrease in subcutaneous (SQ) abdominal fat in the ASOX group compared to the TE and PL groups although body weight changes did not differ by treatment group. There was also a tendency for the ASOX group to exhibit greater losses in visceral fat, and the absolute level of visceral fat in this group was significantly lower at 3 months than in the TE and PL groups. There were significant main effects of treatment at 3 months on serum T and free T (increased in the TE group and decreased in the ASOX group) and on thyroid hormone parameters (T4 and T3 resin uptake significantly decreased in the ASOX group compared with the other two groups). There was a significant decrease in HDL-C, and increase in LDL-C in the ASOX group, which led to their being switched to the parenteral nandrolone decanoate (ASND) after 3 months. ASND had opposite effects on visceral fat from ASOX, producing a significant increase from 3 to 9 months while continuing to decrease SQ abdominal fat. ASND treatment also decreased thigh muscle area, while ASOX treatment increased high muscle. ASND reversed the effects of ASOX on lipoproteins and thyroid hormones. The previously reported effect of T to decrease visceral fat was not observed, in fact, visceral fat in the TE group increased slightly from 3 to 9 months, although SQ fat continued to decrease. Neither TE nor AS treatment resulted in any change in urologic parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Oral oxandrolone decreased SQ abdominal fat more than TE or weight loss alone and also tended to produce favorable changes in visceral fat. TE and ASND injections given every 2 weeks had similar effects to weight loss alone on regional body fat. Most of the beneficial effects observed on metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors were due to weight loss per se. These results suggest that SQ and visceral abdominal fat can be independently modulated by androgens and that at least some anabolic steroids are capable of influencing abdominal fat.

Macro: Does Anavar have any effect on A2 receptors??
NO DIRECT EFFECT

BUT....

it may/will decrease test and as a 17aa there may be an increase aromatase(this varies and since most aromatization takes place peripherally...well???)... so it may increase estrogen.. which may be why some people get gyno from it... though it may just be that it is contaminated anavar.

if it upsets the balance with an increase in estrogen.. since anavar is not a strong androgen (which both test and its metabolite DHT are) it may increase risk of gyno... but will probably not increase A2 stimulation because even though there is more aromatase there is less test to convert..

Very good read. Huck has been consistently posting intriguing studies since pre-mod days till now.

I wonder if any studies were done on fat burning effects(if any) from methandriol depropionate? Since MD is an estrogen which strangely, does not aromatise.

I think its time George got money from the gov. for sponsoring some of these studies. We need to see how this stuff works on averages guys and not obese peeps. We could make money , be guinea pigs, and get big/ripped. Karma karma karma

Well they were using it POST-oxandrolone,every other week. But I suggest using it DURING,at 200-400mgs/week,the low end dosage being for therapeutic purposes only.

What I find interesting is that ox effected blood lipid profiles. I've heard of this happening with stanozolol. Therefore I wonder if it is a property of all orals?

And does anyone know where I can get a Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometer?

Huck, great post!!!

Would this seem to suggest supplementing T3 at the completion of an Anavar cycle???

Actually it's not a bad idea to supplement most of your cycles with small ammounts of t3. It will help with the protein synthesis, fat burning and bloat.

On the Oxandrolone's effects on T3/T4 levels, this is from oxandrin.com:

"... may decrease levels of thyroxine-binding globulin, resulting in decreased
total T4 serum levels and increased resin uptake of T3 and T4. Free thyroid
hormone levels remain unchanged. In addition, a decrease in PBI and radioactive
iodine uptake may occur."

I am gonna start an ox only cycle soon and I'm considering throwing some tiratricol into the mix, just in case.

No, japanese "furazabol" is an oral AS prescribed for poor lipid profiles, but unfortunately, it is only made/prescribed in Japan and very, very hard to obtain.

Thanks HUCK, good material Bro....
And Mac also. I appreciate your work as MODs.

As a testimonial, I have found a very noticeable loss of what I would call visceral fat on Ox alone. I have also had 5 week post cycle (of anavar only, 20mg/day, 6 weeks) blood tests and found HDL's lowered and LDL's a bit higher. SGOT and SGPT were borderline high but that may be partially due to hard training which breaks down muscle and puts those enzymes into the blood stream. I also get gyno after usung anavar in as little amounts as 20mg a day for 4-6 weeks. Plus some hair loss. I do react very rapidly to AS. I waited 5 weeks to test my serum testosterone levels also. While they were at the high end of normal, they were above what you would expect to see in a middle aged man over 40. This could be due to the fact that I have a naturally high test level as I took nothing else during the cycle .... or due to the fact that I took 20mg Novladex for 3 weeks following the cycle. Any comments on whether Novladex would skew a serum testosterone test... even after 2 weeks of not taking it? Thanks for the info. I enjoy this type of post MODs.

Nolvadex has some E/R binding capacities at the hypothalamus,so it could potentially raise endogenous T production through increased Gonadotropin-releasing-hormone(which is the catalystic hormone in the H-P-T axis).

Hey Bro, what is RU referred to above?

Excellent info. Thanks, Huck. I'm getting ready to start an Anavar/Test/GH cycle and this is good stuff to know. I'll be throwing in 25mcg of T3 ed to compensate for the Anavar/GH losses.

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to investigate regional changes in body composition and anthropometric variables induced by nandrolone decanoate in bodybuilders. In a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled design 16 subjects received weekly intramuscular injections containing 200 mg nandrolone decanoate (ND) or placebo. Composition of total body and body parts were assessed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), skinfolds and circumferences. Measurements were performed at baseline, after 8 weeks ND administration period and 6 weeks after drug withdrawal. DEXA revealed that total body mass (from 76.16 ± 2.70 to 78.73 ± 4.07 kg, p < 0.5) and bone-free lean mass (from 59.54 ± 2.36 to 63.06 ± 2.99 kg, p < 0.025) increased significantly during ND administration whereas bone mineral mass remained unchanged. Six weeks after drug cessation bone-free lean mass was still increased compared to baseline levels. During ND administration significant increments of bone-free lean mass of the trunk (+ 2.03 kg) and legs (+ 1.08 kg) could be observed. Percentage fat of the legs decreased during the drug intervention period (-- 1.9 %) and remained lowered six weeks after drug withdrawal. No alteration in any variable of the arms was observed. Skinfolds did not change during the entire study period in both groups. After 8 weeks ND administration circumference of the neck was increased (+ 0.9 cm) significantly although all circumferences underwent non-significant gains. In conclusion, the intramuscular administration of nandrolone decanoate (200 mg per week) during eight weeks induced an increase of body weight and bone-free lean body mass in bodybuilders that was mainly situated in the trunk and legs as determined by DEXA. The changes in the trunk were reflected in the circumferences but not the alterations in the legs. Skinfolds were not able to detect changes of fat mass of body parts. DEXA revealed that total fat mass and total percentage fat remained unaffected by drug administration while percentage fat of the legs decreased and remained lowered after drug cessation. These data indicate that changes of the composition of body parts induced by ND are elucidated less accurately by circumferences or skinfolds rather than by DEXA.

Ok. I see.

Oxandrolone REDUCES total T4 blood concentrations.

Now, since 80% of the bodies T3 is converted from
T4 what happens is that you end up with
less blood concentrations of T3.

T3 really isn't necessary in this case. Ephedrine
will increase T4-T3 conversion bringing
the blood T3 concentrations right back up
to normal.

Also, AAS SUPPRESS TSH, leading to lower levels
of T3 and T4. This is one of the reasons they are such effective
muscle builders.
By adding exogeneous T3 you increase blood T3 concentrations
which increases NET PROTEIN SYNTHESIS, while not realy
doing any harm to your TSH levels because they are
already being supressed.

An increase n NET protein synthesis yields
a GREATER amount of protein that can be
used to grow new contractile tissue.

Fonz- Please show me some references that indicate that thyroid hormone increases MUSCLE protein synthesis.

Andy, I normally don't bother to get in an argument
because its like talking to a wall with some people, but
for your troubles I'll be blunt.

Thyroid Hormones increase NET BODY PROTEIN SYNTHESIS

So, before exogeneous thyroid is taken:

Available protein synthesis capacity for muscles:

Say X(1) = % of Net Body Synthesis.

Now, assume you introduce exogeneous T3 that
DOES INCREASE NET BODY PROTEIN
SYNTHESIS.

X now becomes = X(1) + AX(1)

A being the % increase in NET PROTEIN SYNTHESIS
due to the exogeneous T3.

Now, since X > X(1)

Muscle protein synthesis have gone UP, as MUSCLE
protein synthesis are directly related to the
increase in thyroid levels caused
by the exogeneous T3.
Sure, organ protein synthesis rates go up BUT
so do muscle synthsis rates.

It is a SIMPLE mathematical series.

Is that simple enough for you?

Is there any research showing that equipoise has fat burning properties? Or is it just used as a cutting drug because of low aromitization?

There's very little published research that's been done on it,and that which is available doesn't make mention of what it does at the fat-metabolism level.I actually have a theory that it has plasma expanding properties, which would mean that it draws fluids out of sub-q into the veinous network. This would account for that paper-thin skin/vascular look that it gives you.Nothing documented regarding this theory, just something I have theorized on from the reports of almost anyone who's used it.

Ingestion of androgenic-anabolic steroids induces mild thyroidal impairment in male body builders.

Appears In
JOURNAL OF CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM. vol. 76, no. 4 (1993 Apr): 1069-71.

Abstract
Self-administration of very high doses of androgenic anabolic steroids is common use in power athletes because of their favorable effect on performance. Since androgenic steroids decrease serum T4-binding globulin (TBG) concentrations dramatically, we were interested in the effects of this procedure on thyroid function: we performed TRH tests (200 micrograms Relefact, i.v.), with blood withdrawal before and for 180 min after injection, for determination, using RIA kits, of serum concentrations of total and free T4, total T3, TSH, and TBG in 13 young (20-29 yr old) male body builders with clinically normal thyroid glands, who were all in the same state of training. Five of these athletes admitted taking androgenic anabolic steroids at an average total dose of 1.2 g/week for at least 6 weeks before the tests. TBG, total T4, and total T3 were significantly (P < 0.001) decreased, whereas basal TSH and free T4 were not significantly different from the values of the other 8 without androgenic steroids. The maximum TSH increase after TRH administration (mean +/- SE, 16 -/+ 6 vs. 9 -/+ 4 mU/L; P < 0.05) was relatively increased, whereas the T3 response to TRH (0.61 -/+ 0.10 vs. 1.13 -/+ 0.13 nmol/L; P < 0.05) was relatively decreased in the group receiving androgens. The 5 patients taking androgens had significantly greater weight (114 vs. 90 kg; P < 0.01) and higher total cholesterol levels (6.3 -/+ 1.3 vs. 3.8 -/+ 0.3 mmol/L; P < 0.05) together with very low high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (0.20 -/+ 0.03 vs. 1.03 -/+ 0.10; P < 0.001) than the controls. PRL levels were normal and similar in both groups. We conclude from our results that high dose androgenic anabolic steroid administration leads to a relative impairment (within the normal range) of thyroid function. Whether this is due to a direct thyroid hormone release (or synthesis?)-blocking effect of these steroids needs further investigation.

A paradigm of experimentally induced mild hyperthyroidism: effects on nitrogen balance, body composition, and energy expenditure in healthy young men.

Abstract
Although T3 exerts major regulatory actions in both animals and humans, most clinical studies of T3 administration have been relatively short term. The present study examined the effects of more than 2 months (63 days) of low dose T3 treatment on nitrogen balance, body composition, 24-h energy expenditure (EE), and protein turnover in seven healthy men studied at an in-patient metabolic unit. Subjects were also randomly assigned to either high or low fat diets to determine the effects of diet composition. T3 treatment produced significant losses in both lean mass (1.5 +/- 0.3 kg) and fat mass (2.7 +/- 0.4 kg) by 6 weeks, with similar reductions in both at 9 weeks. The high fat diet somewhat attenuated the loss of body fat. Nitrogen balance was significantly negative for the first 3 weeks of T3 treatment, but tended to return to baseline thereafter. There were no significant effects of treatment on protein turnover at 9 weeks, although there was a slight increase in leucine oxidation (P = 0.07). Despite the apparent adaptation in nitrogen balance, total 24-h EE and sleeping EE were significantly increased at 9 weeks. We conclude that although healthy men are able to adapt to mild hyperthyroidism in terms of nitrogen balance, they exhibit significant and persistent changes in fat and fat-free mass as well as energy balance.

Effects of thyroxine on protein turnover in rat skeletal muscle.

Appears In
AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY. vol. 235, no. 2 (1978 Aug): E231-6.

Journal Info Abbreviation: Am J Physiol. Journal Subset: IM.. Country of Publication: UNITED STATES.

Abstract
The effects of thyroxine (T4) on protein turnover in skeletal muscle were studied using normal, thyroidectomized (thyrex), and hypophysectomized (hypox) rats. Thyrex rats had a depressed growth rate that was accompanied by 50% reductions in the level of RNA and the rate of protein synthesis in gastrocnemius muscle, as determined in the perfused hemicorpus. Protein synthetic efficiency (protein synthesis per unit RNA) was decreased by 18%. Daily treatment of thyrex rats with T4 at different dose levels for up to 16 days led to improved growth rates, elevated RNA concentrations, and increased protein synthesis rates. The primary effect of T4 was to increase the protein synthetic capacity of muscle. Protein degradation, determined in the perfused hemicorpus, and activity of a lysosomal protease, determined in unperfused muscle, were reduced in the thyrex condition. Treatment of thyrex rats with T4 increased protein degradative rates, but not protease activity. Hypox rats, which also exhibited depressed skeletal muscle protein synthesis, responded to T4 and combined T4 and growth hormone with marked improvements in protein synthesis.

Protein metabolism in skeletal muscle tissue from hyperthyroid patients after preoperative treatment with antithyroid drug or selective beta-blocking agent. Results from a prospective, randomized study.

Appears In
JOURNAL OF CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM. vol. 59, no. 5 (1984 Nov): 835-9.

Journal Info Abbreviation: J Clin Endocrinol Metab. Journal Subset: AIM. IM.. Country of Publication: UNITED STATES.

Abstract
Protein metabolism in skeletal muscle tissue was studied in three groups of patients undergoing thyroid surgery: group I (n = 8), hyperthyroid patients preoperatively treated with an antithyroid drug and T4; group II (n = 8), hyperthyroid patients preoperatively treated with the beta 1-selective adrenoreceptor blocking agent metoprolol; group III (n = 5), euthyroid patients operated on for nodular goiter or adenoma. The study was prospective and hyperthyroid patients were randomly allocated to one of the two preoperative regimens. During operation a biopsy was taken from the sternohyoid muscle and rates of protein synthesis and degradation were measured in incubated muscle tissue. Clinical improvement was equal in the two groups of hyperthyroid patients during preoperative treatment but serum T3 concentrations remained elevated in patients treated with metoprolol. Thus, these patients were biochemically hyperthyroid at the time of operation. The rate of protein degradation was significantly higher in hyperthyroid patients treated with metoprolol than in patients of groups I and III. A significant positive correlation was found between serum T3 and rate of protein degradation in skeletal muscle. Protein synthesis rates were similar in the three groups of patients. This study demonstrated for the first time increased proteolysis in skeletal muscle tissue from patients with high serum T3 concentrations. The results indicate that changes of skeletal muscle protein metabolism in hyperthyroid patients are not normalized by beta 1-blockade despite the fact that this treatment effectively controlled symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism.

Bottom line

Low thyroid status impairs metabolism, cognitive function, somatic growth and skeletal muscle protein synthesis. That is why it is so important to taper off thyroid slowly.

Elevated thyroid levels (above normal limits) do not enhance protein synthesis but increase proteolysis (protein breakdown). However this effect appears to be temporary when a mild hyperthyroid state is induced by taking T3. In contrast, the effects of increased metabolic rate persist.

I think there is more to the anavar T3/T4 issue than meets the eye.

Just because there is a change in T4 and T3 uptake (most oral androgens will cause a decrease in T4 and increase in T3 uptake; just the opposite of the oral estrogens) doesn't mean that there will be a change in metabolism. In fact, FTI = T4 x T3 uptake, so as long as the sum of the two doesn't change, that usually indicates no overall change.

Most people (male or female) that I've talked to over the years that have used anavar have had no problem getting razor lean with diet alone (no T3) + anavar so I question whether this actually represents a mild hypothyroid state. There are many other factors (receptor density, etc.) that may be involved as well. So, mild impairment in lab values may have little physiological effect.

I have to find that Int J Obesity paper in my files. The abstract states that both T4 and T3 uptake decrease, that shouldn't be.

interesting...i actually get a "positive-rebound" whenever I stop T-3. For about two weeks I lose bodyfat at an accelerated pace, one that is faster than when I am on the T-3. It really is a very dramatic change.

Where has this guy been? I like this guy!

Yup.. Every study I have EVER read indicates that t3 increases protein synthesis... BUT NOT AS MUCH AS IT DOES PROTEIN DEGREDATION.

The myth, "taking t3 while on a cycle to increase protein synthesis" has to be one of my all-time most hated myths.. And it won't go away.

Now where did Fonz go?

I am thinking there may be a connection to the fat burning effects of oxandrolone and winny adn the poor lipid profiles they produce. Niacin, when taken in large doses improves lipid profiles, but also inhibits lipolysis in adipose tissue

So Fonz: I know youve recommended gugguls w/ anavar cycles because it helps with the cholesterol issues. Would this help/hinder the T3 issue? Might this study make you not suggest gugguls w/ anavar anymore? or favor it even more? Educate my dumb ass
