Deadlifts w/chalk?

MsBeverlyHills

New member
Im ripping my fingers up on the bar & thought I should switch to chalk instead of wearing gloves. does chalk improve your grip on DLs? any thoughts or experience w/chalk?

I stopped using gloves a long time ago. I found that I actually received more calloses from wearing the gloves than when I just used my hands. I belong to a yuppie gym, so they don't have chaulk. If they did' I'd use it.

It's LA Fitness. The Gold's that I used to belong to until it became a Balley's had chaulk. I used it. gets in EVERYTHING.

yeah no chalk allowed at my gym either (24 hour fitness), so i bring a rosin bag (like used in baseball) and that helps my grip, keeps my hands dry etc. keep it in a small ziploc baggie, looks illegal, but works like a charm.

Chalk will help your grip. It's not allowed at my Gold's either, but nobody will say anything as long as you don't get it over everything. :)

Chalk and a mixed grip allows me to grip 700+lbs. Without chalk, using a mixed grip I might be able to hold 495, but not for long. It makes a huge difference if you use alot of it. Thing with chalk is, it dried and tore up my hands alot more then when I used straps. To the point of bleeding. So I think gloves or straps would be better if thats your concern.

CCJ- will the knurling still tear up my fingers if im using chalk?

aerojax- whats rosin?

Might depend on how heavy your going too. It definately tears up my hands. Scabbed up hands arent an issue for me though, Ill still be back training the next day. Your skin will get thicker eventually and itll lessen the problem.

As everyone here has said, ya chalk makes a hell of a difference. If your looking to increase your grip strength at all, then definitetly ditch the gloves and pick up some chalk.

Yes, the knurling will still tear up your fingers wether you use chalk or rosin.

Rosin is used by baseball pitchers to assist in gripping the seams/skin of the baseball (I played a lot of softball, but never used the stuff until I started lifting last year).

Once my back strength exceeded my grip, I picked up a pair of straps which enabled me to lift more, but didn't improve my grip. I was "encouraged" to ditch the straps and work on static holds/farmer walks, etcetera...which did wonders for my grip. Now, I just use the rosin bag and a mixed grip. My back strength hasn't exceeded my grip strength quite yet. When it does, I know it'll be time to incorporate farmer walks once again!

BTW, I never had much success using gloves. They seemed to get in the way more than anything else, not to mention make it very difficult for me to hold the bar...

Yup, for the best grip you have to use chalk for deads. Most gyms won't allow it but it does make a difference if your getting chalk all over the place with folks tracking up the place. That shit can get messy quick.
