SAN DIEGO -- A professional body builder who sold fake human growth hormone has been sentenced to five months in federal prison and five months of house arrest.

Dave Palumbo, of Long Island, N.Y., bought the counterfeit serostim from a San Diego-based distribution ring. Four other men, including a father and son from National City, have pleaded guilty.

Palumbo pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court in October to illegally selling 90 boxes of the fake hormone for about $63,000.

His lawyer argued in court Friday that the weightlifter and editor of RxMuscle magazine thought he was dealing with the real thing and injected some of the concoction himself.

Prosecutors say Palumbo appeared on national television as an expert on counterfeit hormone and should have known the difference between the real and fake versions of serostim, a hormone approved for use by underweight AIDS patients.

The fake serostim was made by an Oregon company for Ronald Nollett Sr. and Roland Nollett Jr., of National City.

demand for GH is BOOMING, and the usual 8 year patent protection doesnt come into it like it does with drugs taht arent synthetic hormones

if you ahve a normal drug, ie a chemical, all you have to do is make it via established generic processes (organic chem, usually) and there you go.

in the case of GH, the entire manufacturing process is patented and part of the drug approval - therefore if you wanted to make it, you ahve to use the companies production process...which they arent going to let you do...or you ahve to prove that your version of the drug is identical...which you cant...which means you then have to apply for your version of GH as a new drug...which costs about 500 millon, and isnt worth is because the existing company will cut your grass all the way

so overseas production of drugs like this are not going to be overlooked by the company. no way. too much to lose. they essentially have an indefinitely protected cash stream in the hundreds of millons per year from GH, which is going to be used to bankroll the next generation of drugs
