Yet the more complex ones seldom work as described for me.

I bought the QUE book.

Has someone found a really good photoshop manual?

The Photoshop WOW series is also good.

Exactly. I basically taught myself the basics. It's not very hard. Just fuck around, and you will learn. THEN get a manual and learn the hard, crafty shit.

buy the photoshop book by SEYBOLD PRESS. Fucking kicks ass, goes through step by step with examples and you'll master everything in one week. It's caleld photoshop complete course or soemthing.
