DaBuffGeigh, can you do this?

I broke my hand at a Cryptopsy (reunion with lord worm) show back in 2003 at Soma San Diego. I saw them the night before in Arizona too.

My buddy's older brother was the original drummer for cattle decapitation back around this time, he was also the drummer for the vegancore band "the locust" back then. I remember hanging out with Travis, the lead singer, in their house in South Park discussing our favorite Carcass album. His was Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious, as it should have been.

Those guys all seemed like recovering drug addicts to me. Small, skinny, malnourished.

Soma's an all ages venue, so it's mainly full of kids. Pretty sure everyone in the South Park area has HIV.

I'd like to see DaBuffGeigh do this:

There's one thing these types of drummers have in common. They can play really fast singles. Not exactly "hard". Most people think that if you can play fast, then you are good. That's not necessarily true.

As you know, I have no interest in the type of music these guys play, so "no" I can't do it because I've never attempted a blast beat once in my entire life.

Can I play that fast? Darn near close.

Are they good? For their genre and style, yeah they are really good. Can't discount their skill.

I just have a hard time even appreciating that much, because the music the play is atrocious IMO.

You want to see true skill, speed, control and technique?

Watch a true master show the art of real drumming technique...on a pad. This is still basic drumming, but his skill level is obviously above everyone else. Morello is a legend. I'm not even a fan of Jazz or Big Band stuff, but that era of drummers truly produced the most skilled and dedicated players. Morello, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, etc.

Watch this:

Now, I like playing rock music, and my favorite drummer is Neil Peart. He's considered one of the best rock drummers ever, arguably #1, as he's received more drumming awards than anyone in history.

This solo received Grammy nomination, it's long but it shows all the elements of excellent drumming. Rudimentary precision, controlled and expressive dynamics, actual musical composure and structure, creativity and all out badass-ness.

Watch the whole thing, it's continually impressive.

And yes, I can play pretty much that entire thing.

It takes literally years of practice just to get to the point where you can even start trying to attempt this kinda stuff.

The stuff you posted requires speed and control, which also takes years to develop and is a skill all its own, but IMO it seriously lacks creativity. I don't mean to say it sucks, because it doesn't, it's just very 1-dimensional. Not always, but typically so.

Derek Roddy is actually one of the few drummers in this genre that I actually enjoy watching. He's a beast.
