I would mail it back to the states using small boxes. Wrap your gear in carbon paper. Make sure you use USPS. Do not use USPS express delivery, that makes the package more likely to be searched by customs. Definitely do not use a courier service like UPS and FedEx. Their packages are routinely inspected by customs. I would not bring the gear back with you on your flight home. Many bros do this with no problems, but I don't think it's worth the risk if you get caught. If your gear gets caught by customs in the mail, you will most likely only get a seizure letter. If you get caught with gear in the airport, YOU ARE FUCKED!!

Okay, since you asked for constructivity here and not laughter:
Let's say you get your half shoebox-sized box. Maybe you wrap the stuff inside in carbon paper, or maybe you wrap the box in carbon paper and then wrap the ready-to-post box in nice, brown standard mailing paper.
Customs Inspector: "Hmmmm. This looks peculiar. Looks like a black box to me. Don't see many black boxes, and I've been doing this for 6 years. Wonder what's inside? Let's have a look. Or, better to be safe and have a look after the dogs check it out."

i've never understood the point of carbon paper. if you send your shit via usps they have millions of pieces of mail everyday. they don't xray them all. but if they see something in your package special enough to pull it aside for an xray, don't you think they will check it out if they can't tell what's in it?
i doubt they say "this looks suspicious enough to xray but i can't tell what's in it. . . . hmm, just let it go through"

I've sent gear every now and then to the states (from sweden,europe). All the packages have gone throgh customs without any problems. About the packaging. Yes I use carbon paper so you guys are half right. If you want further instructions on how I "deliver" the gear email or PM me. I'm not to happy about telling, who ever is watching this forum, my methods.

Okay, fellas. No flames intended and my apologies for any misunderstandings.
My point really was that you have a very small chance of having a package land in North America and getting it scanned, let alone sniffed.
About the carbon paper, seems to me it would tell that there is a "black something" inside that, in the event of a scan, and would arouse suspicion. Customs inspectors, as I have understood it, don't like to see black boxes on an X-ray. Just put yourself in their place.
Other than that, just keep it small and mail away.
