Cursed by clean eating!!!

So last night I had the mad cravings for a nice little Tri -Tip steak, avo cilantro cucumber salad (evoo, garlic, red vinegar and salt), baked red potato plain (I might add and really baked, no micro) and sautaed mushrooms and onions in evoo, topped it off with a HALF a glass a very nice wine....

Holy mother of god, I was up at 2:30AM heaving my wonderful cullinary creations all over the bathroom, then they decided to come out the other end too.... wtf! I have spent so many years eating clean, that I cant even have steak and wine anymore! NOOOOOOO!!!

everyone else that ate is fine, so I really think it's my system, I'm cursed.... I love to eat! oh no! does this happen to anyone else?
I cant even eat splenda.... chemicals make me hurt.

Here's why. The steak is laced with chemicals. There are antibiotics, growth hormones and other such crap in conventional meats. Try organic steak. It costs more but your stomach will thank you. I eat organic everything. I even transitioned to the macrobiotic diet. Now THAT'S hard! No meat, only fish, but only 2-3 times per week, No dairy, lots of whole grains, beans veggies, no potatoes. People have actually cured themselves of disease by using this diet - like cancer, hepititis, and AIDS.

I have to be careful because I'm really sensative, I only eat organic meat and dairy and 95% of everything else I eat is organic too, excepting some condiments, wasabi, shoyu, things like that.
But usually I'm okay, not great, but okay enough I can eat meat and drink a glass of wine and still function the next day or even hours later.
That would be a hard diet to follow! k to you! I just love fish and chix too much to cut down or cut it out. How long have you been doing it for?

Hey Victoria, im interested as well! I've been vegetarian for 22 years ( im 26 almost) and im looking to get rid of all the chemicals i eat.... its almost ALL i eat! =( tell us about the macrobiotic diet? or if you have any links??

Okay......here's the thing with the macrobiotic diet - It's against federal law to say that anything can treat, prevent, or cure a disease besides a drug. So, I actually broke the law. Isn't that very wrong?! That's why this diet is not blasted into the forefront of medical news. It would put the pharmacies out of business. It's been around forever, though. It detoxes your body of all the toxins and chemicals you've been eating all your life, so you may have what's called a cleaning reaction - It's when your body is trying to rid itself of stored toxins and it temporarily makes you a little sick. ANYHOO - Here it goes. There is very little info publicly out there on it, but there are lots of books. A Japenese couple, Michio and Avelene Kushi brought it to the east coast of the US. It is basically all organic, no meat or poultry, you can have fish about 2X a week. Lots of whole grains and beans. It's hard to explain. Here's 2 books I have "Making the Transition to a Macrobiotic Diet" by Carolyn Heidenry, and "Aveline Kushi's Complete Guide to Macrobiotic Cooking". I actually know someone who cured himself of cancer with this diet in 3 months. It's trial and error with the recipies. Some are good and some are not-let's just say. There is a national chain supermarket called Whole Foods that sells everything you would need for all-organic and macrobiotic diets. Oh, and it uses a lot of sea vegetables, but they are surprisingly tasteless, for the most part, and blend in with the food completely.

Well I guess all I can add to this is that I consider steak part of my "clean diet" and I've pounded both steak & red wine (ok not pounded, but consumed both) on competition day after 16 weeks of uber clean diet and had no problems at all. I really don't even consider that to be anything outside of a "clean diet" and have been pretty common parts of at least 4 competition diets I've run w/ some wine cheats in there. The only times I've actually yakked from food has been when it was truly food poisoning.

Just wanted to throw that in - not arguing that there aren't all sorts of shit in the food we eat, but cali, it seems to me tha you may just be particularly sensitive to somethign you ate or maybe it was somethign else somewhere in the meal that made it not sit right.

I have had the same affect. Certain times I could eat something and have no problem, and other times it's horrible. When I was eating a lot of uncooked vegetables, and some chicken and then I would try eating like ice cream, mexican, fried food, greasy anything and it would tear me up. Since I have been eating more meat (hormone free from whole foods), organic rice, organic egg whites, pretty much everything clean and then I go into a restaurant and eat I have had no problems as long as I order a meat (not fried), baked veggies, and even drink some alcohol..... Now if order mexican, greasy, fried foods I get the same effect. So I've tried both the organic, and the not organic and have the same effect from "Bad foods" I wouldn't consider what you ate bad foods though.... Everyone's system is a little different though.

Could you have had the stomach flu? Since no one else was sick? Victoria I have heard alot of good things and problems going away with a macro diet

It only lasted for a few hours, no aches, pains, or fever and headache, I felt fine by the afternoon. I eat tons of veggies, chix and fish, and love to eat a good steak every once and a while, sometimes after I feel kinda icky but never really nausious. I'm hoping Sassy is right, maybe something in there was just off, cause i sure do want to be able to eat steak, just think I'll stay away for awhile.

Victoria, how long did it take for you to transition? What are your primary sources of protien? beans? Do you supplement with anything? How long have you been at it? Whole Foods Market is GREAT, I buy from there and Trader Joe's.... love that Joe!

Trellin, sounds like our systems alot alike... somedays can, others no can! kind of like russian roulette with food, scary, I hate to throw up.
:worried:

It took me about a month to transition. You just start replacing the foods you would normally eat with macro foods. Like I started making REAL cream of wheat for breakfast instead of the instant. Here's the catch that makes it a little hard - NO SUGAR! That's the hardest thing. There are alternative sweetners like rice syrup, barley malt syrup, and brown rice syrup and even maple syrup to sweeten things with, though. You can actually have withdrawls from the sugar, like it's a drug! The main protien source is beans, mainly soy foods like tempeh - it's got a slight cheesy taste, it's pretty good. Going to try a tofu recipe tonight, I'll let you know how that is. Miso soup is a staple for it's blood cleaning ability- 2 cups a day. Lentils, chic peas, pinto beans, navy beans, etc. I strongly suggest buying a book written by one of the Kushi's. I've been doing it for a month straight now. Let me tell you something, I'm RIPPED! You lose a lot of the excess body fat due to the detoxing effect of the diet. When you first start, it seems complicated, but iit really isn't. Just have a whole grain beakfast cereal for breakfast(one that you make that is), Oh and coffee is a no-no. Herbal teas are it. For lunch, have a cup of miso soup, some raw or stir fried veggies, throw a serving of beans into the soup, and there's lunch. For dinner, again miso soup, a green salad with a sesame seed oil and ume vinegar dressing, and some baked or fried tempeh and some pickles. I also have a recipe book called American Macrobiotic Cooking, for the "americanized" palate. Like I said some recipe's are great and some are just down right yukky. You're not gonna like every recipe, like all cookbooks.

Thanks for the reply! Sounds pretty simple, and alot of that is already in my diet. I grew up in the pacific islands so we are very used to japanese style cooking and sea veggies, good stuff. The coffee for me would be tough, but sen-cha rocks! 2-5 cups a day! are you eating white miso or red? Thanks for all the info, I'm really intrested, I'll have to check out a book!

I eat barley miso (I guess that may be red?) It comes concentrated and I use it like a stock for soups and sauces. Also I buy organic miso broth from Whole Foods, their 365 brand. The marco diet has a type of coffee you can make from grains, but if you're looking for caffeine, it's not there. Twig tea is the only caffeine in the diet. Oh, and I tried my tofu dish tonight, It was gelatinous, but not bad. Kinda bland so I sprinkled gomasio on it -That's just toasted sesame seeds and sea salt.

I really find that after getting used to not consuming very much oil in food, that oil does not digest so well and will cause diarrhea and vomiting. This is pretty much common for lots of people. Although EVOO is healthy, it sounds like you may have just had too much of a good thing. ;-) HTH

You know, I think thats got to be it. Days later now, no one else in my family has gotten ill, so no flu, no food poisoning. The major unusual for me that night, was the 1/2 glass wine, and the amount of evoo. I have read that olive oil turns rancid after it reaches a certian high temp while cooking, have you heard that too? I usually cook without oil, just use it on salad like the cuc/avo. Think I'll avoid that oil for awhile, mushrooms too.
