crushing an egg....

I read someone's post yesterday, that he and his 250lbs-friend each tried to crush an egg in their hand, and couldn't do it. What they did was to wrap their fingers around the egg, so that the pressure is distributed all over the surface. I figured, why the hell not try it. Let me tell you: whoever posted that shit, has a very weak grip :) the egg didn't break immediately, and it took some force on my part, but its doable. The insides of that egg went everywhere, getting on my roommate, the couch, and the walls.. :) it's so funny.

So someone got you to squish an egg on yourself.....nice.

I've heard that, think I even tried is once, think you have to hold the egg in your palm with the "long way" pointing from your fingers to your wrist. Don't think I crushed it but I was also inside and didn't want to take the chance. I've been looking for something to keep me busy all weekend, this should do.

the actual "trick" is that an egg is strong in terms of force through it in one plane.

you just said that you were exerting it all over the egg - should be easy to break that way.

if you stand an egg up so that the wider end is straight down and the smaller end is straight up, and then apply the force to the top and bottom so that all of the force is going straight down through it, then it is extremely hard to break.
It is because it is esentially two arches connected, and that is one of the best ways to disperse force.

that said, while you are doing this, if you exert any lateral force, it will crumble and explode - forcing the contents out onto you in order to dissipate the engery you were expending on it in attmpts to break it.

essentially you did it wrong.

but congrats on breaking an egg.

Well, I guess I'll try it again, and it's gonna be right this time. On that same thread about the eggs, it also said that B Fold was going to crush a can of coke. I don't think he ever did though. That's gotta be tough.

So is this an admission that you did it incorrectly?
Yet "the egg didn't break immediately, and it took some force on my part"???

lol.... if you have a tough time breaking an egg the 'wrong' way then just wait til' you try it the 'right' way.

Well, that's my point exactly: it was harder than what one thought it would be, you know. It wasn't like I was sweating for half an hour to break it, come on man! :) It's just you usually expect the eggs to be so fragile, while they are actually not.

This used to be true in america about 10 years back, that you could not crush an egg either way you put it in your palm.. From what ive heard, the hormones now given to chickens have caused the shell to loose alot of its integrity and therefore make it much easier to crush under pressure....
