The punishment is way too high, especially for the kind of viri that just spread around and don´t do anything else.
A virus that causes a lot of damage should be judged as harshly as is other economical criminality.

instead of life in prison, they should just calculate the damage caused by the virus and make the person pay it off.
sure, it will be completely unrealistic, especially when viruses cause millions upon millions of dollars of damage and the perpetrator will never be able to pay off the sum, but it will ruin the person financially, which, in my opinion, is a far greater penalty than life in prison.
prisons seem to be a little on the cooshy side. i mean, if you have good behaviour, you can go to a minimum security institution, get fed regularly, work out all day and maintain somewhat of a "normal" life albeit highly controlled (since they are criminals after all). plus, i get a kick out of some of the crazy sentences that are laid out like 4000 consecutive life sentences for some godawful crime. what are you supposed to do about that? appeal it down to 1000 life sentences? wooohoooo!!
having a fine of like 1 billion dollars laid down would be pretty funny.

actually i have. stony mountain in manitoba. after re-reading my post, i'm not saying that the high security prisons are cooshy (although i came off saying that). quite the contrary. they can and are quite violent. but after speaking with a number of convicts (many of them violent crime offenders), there is a definite threat of violence. but you can minimize that risk by keeping to yourself and just carrying out your sentence. after a period of good behaviour, you can go to an institution like rockwood. having been there, it's pretty sweet. pool tables, weight room, gymnasium, television. all in all, "cooshy".

Depends on which side you stand. If you're ok with the "wing" leader as they called it, your life there wont be so miserable. Plus they get pot, cigs, booze.... and even hookers. Trust me on this.
BTW life in prison is exaggerated. Maybe just a public flogging would be enough.
