Could the world enter another Dark Age?

Sometimes when I look at the religous wackiness going on in the world I start thinking that one day churches will go on another power grab and we'll enter the Dark Ages again. Then again, the church cannot go on a rampage against science again in our modern world. Afterall, science is what creates the weapons needed for the various theologies to fight each other. Even with our Christian zealots here in the USA, I have faith that there are more sane people that will never let these extremists have true power in the Western world like the Muslims have in the Mid East.

We may see Europe go thru a clash soon -- most of those countries have already passed thru their 'religious fervor" phases and are now becoming very secular. I think it has been well demonstrated thru history that if you remove religion or some "strong belief" from a society, it starts to lose what it "stands for". Examples include Russia under communism, Hitler tried it, etc. Granted there have been plenty of clashes due to the presence of strong beliefs, but right now w/ the birth rate soooo looow in Europe, they are literally "importing" foreigners, many Muslim, to keep the countries running. (Not to mention a socialist state can't support itself anyway). So you bring in a concentration of people w/ a very strong belief that happens to not be very tolerant of many things within its own teachings and in the extreme, specifically intolerant of any other belief --- enter that into a society that has moved away from any belief (which does promote very high tolerance) ---> you get the one very strong belief beginning to override the a-belief and the people that were so tolerant before suddenly realize they are no longer the norm. In fact they are the ones that are specifically targeted as enemies of the incoming strong belief that is starting to essentially invade their culture.

Basically at some point you can see "European" culture getting swallowed up by Islam simply because they have no "strong belief" among themselves to stand with.

... did that make any sense?

Even tho there is this sort of politically correct anti-evangelical movement in the US, generally speaking people still want their religion in their lives. At least if the alternative was to get someone else's very intolerant religion shoved down their throats and with very real consequences for not "accepting" that faith.

I find it very interesting that the left, the ACLU, etc. continually question Bush about his apparently very strong religious beliefs, e.g. he feels that God told him to be president --- I read recently that Barak Obama said essentially the same thing -- dude is a serious lefty, but they still both claim to be driven by a strong belief. Ultimately I hope that we stop the overkill efforts to be politically correct and pay attention to whether or not we have the option to have the beliefs we have before allowing another very focused belief to supplant it.
