costco salmon

desman

New member
just picked up a large pack of salmon at costco. 2kg for $27(canadian). Good deal but its ATLANTIC.....anyone know if the salmon from costco is caught from the ocean or if it is farm raised...i was under assumption not to get atlantic but rather pacific

all atlantic salmon commercially sold is farm raised either near nova scotia/new brunswick (canada) probably the safest and longest running island (heritage, jail island and stotts farms are best), chilean is a decent product but inferior, european farm raised was the subject matter of the recent study about pcb

granted you can find wild caught atlantic salmon from scotland, ireland and norway but expect to spend lots

wild Pacific salmon (a totally different species of fish) is mainly from british columbia and alaska and the fish are named after the rivers that spawned them such as columbia river, fraiser river and bristol bay (my fave off the bering sea) and are caught before they do their "run" home so they do not lose any body fat (very very high in omega3's moreso than atlantic salmon) generic BC pacific salmon is caught far at sea and not known origin
best quality are line caught and not net caught and most organic brands are pacific salmon
also pacific salmon are rated as king (largest), sockeye/silver, coho and brites (smallest)

good luck des
pm me for sources in ottawa for bc salmon

The study on salmons being contaminated with chemicals is BS

and some wild salmon can be even more contaminated than farm raised one

if you read the study it was based mainly on european farm raised salmon

true that but most time is contaminated during handling

The study was financed by some US company......

Well I'm sure suppliers vary, but I checked on a bag of salmon from Costco and it actually comes from S. America. It IS farmed salmon from that region.

most commercially sold salmon is atlantic farm raised
the lesser expensive is from chile which is not a bad product
i prefer jail island or stotz farms for atlantic heritage is good too all from nova scotia/new brunswick

BC or Pacific salmon is always labeled at such
and is going to be coming at ya fresh real soon
look for it
king is spendy but worth it
but you can get sockeye at a great prices and damn fine on the barby

Hey there Obiwan,..good choice in good tasting salmon,..I'm a full time fishing & hutning guide and during the summer months I guide in the Bristol Bay Watershed. I am also a bit of a slamon snob,..live off of wild game & slamon all year.

Wild Salmon is much higher in the Omega 3's than farm raised Salmon. Its one of the fat reserves a "Wild" salmon has to make its journey up a river to spawn and makes the difference in taste. Generally depending on the consition of the salmon when its caught will also dictate the oil content (omega 3's) Fresher brighter salmon have more than a clored up one. The reason they actually change color is because theyve used up that fatty reserve and are actually digesting themselves fom the outsid in.

When buying salmon at any store (love Costco too,..but its all farm rasied there) look for the following; between the skin and the meat of a fillet along the lateral line there should be a dark gray looking meat. Thats your fat reserve, and farm raised salmon do not have that. Makes a huge diference in taste too.

Also just a note; Copper River Kings are no better tasting then the other Spring Chinook around the Northwest and AK. Its all marketing and yes, Spring Chinook that will be showing in your local markets anytime now do taste best,..because of the higher fat content.

Just some thoughts from a slamon snob
