i got another lab question.

see people, this is what happens when you get this PC affirmative action shit. you get fucking lab instructors who cant speak a fucking word of english to teach a class. sure, it makes some of you do-good types feel all warm and fuzzy, like you're actually making one god damn bit of difference for good...you stupid motherfuckers...see, because of this PC shit, it would be considered 'discrimination' if the school didnt hire people based on the fact THEY CANT SPEAK FUCKING ENGLISH!! so people like me get fucked and/or have to teach it to themselves, which is several times harder. and the only 'advice' i get from people in charge, is to get a tutor. no! FUCK THAT! i wouldnt have to get a motherfuckin tutor if i had someone that could actually say a motherfucking sentence in english

my favorite is when my lab group called her over, started explaining what we had, and then asked her what to do from there. do you know what she says? she looks up, nods, fucking smiles, and say 'yes' and then fucking walks away. the question wasnt yes or no you.

Hang on, let me log out and back in and I will be with you.

had one of those poink...

went to the dean, bitched,
mentioned getting the news
involved...

full refund for the class...

it was just org chem lab...

not like i needed to understand or anything...

i finally figured it out. god bless google. thanks a lot though corn, ill be sure to harass you with more stupid questions in the near future. why dont you go back in the chem field? you have your degree and you're not using it. at least set up some clandestine meth lab in the boonies out there or something. :)

serenity now...serenity now...

lol

I am actively pursuing 2 jobs in the NY area....one with a private lab...one with the Dept Of Justice as a forensic chemist...

Cornholio as a FED???

LOL

There goes my modhood....

what kind of salary do you expect with a chem degree?

With my experience in the field my Gs Fed rating is a GS11/12 which for that job would begin at 70k...

Natty - pass it quick nigga - I'm there in three days

rather like having the fox guard the hen house, huh? :D

Corn, since you are a chemist, answer this... why is there no long ester tren available. We all know it is possible as there was parabolan in the past, but why has it never been created since? I mean, we have the raw materials (tren) so why has someone not stuck a longer ester on it?

go to any University in America for undergrad and you will be taught by a TA that is a PhD student.
in the sciences, a large majority of the PhD students at all schools are from other countries - so you are going to get a lot of people that don't speak english well.
It has nothing to do with PC, it has to do with generating revenue - large Universities want the best and brightest that they can get, and that means that they have to take people from all over in order to get that.
To think that someone isn't bright in science just because they can't speak English well is naive.

I agree that it totally sucks to take a class where you can't understand the person that is speaking, but that is one of the many reasons when one is looking at schools, it is better to not go to an undergrad program at a university and instead go to a smaller college where you get better student to teacher ratios and thereby have a better chance at actually learning something.

at a large university, the school is pressuring the profs to publish, which means they spend a lot of time with their PhD canidates doing research towards that end - they don't work with the undergrads, so they pass the teaching off to the PhD students.
the university makes money off of those publications, as well as bettering its reputation, which in the end meanins increasing revenue.
at a college, they are under far less pressure to publish, and instead are encouraged to actually teach.

all in all, it depends on what you want to take from it - but to complain about what is just a well known scenerio in schools seems a bit silly to me.
if all else fails, find someone in the class that does understand what the hell is going on, and work with them - or study harder from the book and less from the person teaching.

then why did UNC get sued for not hiring a person to teach a class that didnt speak english?

i never said they were stupid, i said the people doing the hiring were. people pay a lot of money for college, and they should be getting the most out of it. why should i pay someone to teach me, when im the one teaching myself? that's fucking bullshit. i know that's how it goes, but it doesnt change the fact that it pisses me off more than i put into words.

lol - I'm not sure I'm grasping the meaning of that sentance, lots of negations there.
let's see - UNC got sued, because they hired someone that spoke english over that of someone that didn't?
what was the outcome of the lawsuit? just because there is a lawsuit doesn't mean there is a win. that said, usually they just settle to avoid dealing with them.

I still maintain that if it bugs you, then you shouldn't be at any university, because that is just how they work.
go to a smaller college and get a better teaching experience.
then if you want to go to a university, go there for post grad.

yeah, it was settled. this was a few years ago when my sister went there, so im not sure about the details on it. i just remember her talking about it.

all of my classes/lectures are taught by normal speaking people, it's just the labs that are the problem. i understand that some guy with a phd doesnt want to sit around and babysit a bunch of undegrads in a chem lab, but the dept heads should not just stick some random grad student in there to do it, especially a grad student that can barely speak a word of english. i mean, they do have to answer some questions and explain some concepts now and then.

i know it's easy to just say that's how it is, but when im working on something that has a midnight deadline, and i dont know exactly what im doing, it becomes really easy to get super pissed.

I hear you.
and it isn't because "some guy with a PhD doesn't want to teach" - hell, nearly all of them get into the field because they want to teach.
but they have pressure from the department heads to get their work published. every school is different, but they have some number of things that they need to get published every year, or they are out - esp if they aren't tenured.
to some extent there is the burnout factor too - when you have that many people that you are supposed to be teaching, then you are just going to fry over time and lose interest in it.

the schools are businesses, and they are there to make money. it is a nice idea to think that they are there to teach you, and the small picture says that they are there to teach you - but overall, that can't exist without money, and in order to make money, they need to do certain things.

I sucked ass at chem labs - my dad was a chemistry professor, so I know a lot via him. but I just wasn't any good at chem lab - I blamed it on my lab prof, but looking back on it, I really should have just used all the resources made available to me. your fellow students are great resources and they are right there. not everyone knows everything, and not everyong is willing to help out - but they are out there.

just be wary of saying "this sucks" and then shifting the blame off on someone and using that as an excuse for not getting something. it is a common thing that pretty much everyone does in college because of the stress.
but if you want to do well - make better use of your resources, regardless of what you think of the system - use what you have to your advatage, and then the sooner you can get out of there with better grades.

also, the grad students usually don't have to pay to go to school for a scientific degree - the university will pay for them to be there. but they don't just give them free money - in order for them to go to school for free, they have to work for the school - which means that they teach your classes.
in return, the university gets bright grad students to improve their research so that more research can be published, which draws more attention to the school, which draws in more applicants and money, etc etc. (not to mention funding if it is a state school)
also - schools have it setup so that any inventions/innovations that are made under their "guidance" is their property - so the smart grad students that they have doing work for them are learning new things, and the school retains the rights to all those ideas. so the school can then patent that material via the student, and then sell the rights to it.
another path to profit.

it goes on and on.

while it is easiest to complain about it, you are better off finding ways around it so that you can get the good grades and get the hell out.
or transfer to a smaller school with better teacher to student ratios

SOmeone is working in that right now - trying to tie a decanoate etsr onto the Tren molecule - half life would run about 5-7 days
