Converting dvd rips to HD

Anyone have much experience with this?

Im converting a dvdrip of Up (avi) to mp4 format to play on my ps3. When I convert to high quality 480p it shits out a 1.9 gig file, but when I convert to 1080p the file is only 1.5 gigs. This doesnt make sense to me. Does the compression better so that it actually requires less disc space? The only thing that makes me think it might actually be working is that it took ~1.5 hrs to convert to 480p while it has taken about 11 hrs to convert to 1080p.

Razor cookies? anyone??

•MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
•MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
•MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)

•DivX
•WMV
- VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

Even if you get it to work I believe you need an HD-DVD or blu-ray player to benefit, plus you'll only get around 36 minutes of video on a DL disc. You might have to just convert (or d/l) a file your DVD will play straight like mkv.

PS3 upscales dvd code, and that's really the best you can ask for here. You can't turn a native 480p signal into a native 1080p one. In many cases you can still fit an HD rip onto a dvd though, although stuff like 7.1 sound might be a tight squeeze.
