Congress just gave away another $48 Billion to fight AIDS

I don't think there will be a vaccine or permanent solution for Heart Disease. There can be prevention, and even then, most will likely die of cancer or stroke anything, both of which are unlikely to be vaccinated against.

AIDS, on the otherhand, is a virus, and we've successfully immunized ourselves from many viruses that killed large proportions of the population throughout human history.

Yeah but you gotta realize, not all viruses are "the same". Aids is a retrovirus so it complicates things a little bit. Is it impossible, nah, but more difficult, sure it is.

Like someone else said earlier, CVD is primarily due to our fucked up society's view on nutrition. High blood pressure is a terrible burden on the body in so many ways. It also happens to be exquisetly sensitive to exercise and weightloss. CVD affects more people than AIDS. Wouldnt it make more sense to push more money towards getting people off their asses and to stop eating big mac's all the time?

I think AIDS gets more money cuz its newer, drug companies still hold patents, and the meds are expensive. Are they deliberately not finding a cure so they can bill people for expensive meds? I'd like to think they arent, but I havent any better idea than my labrador retriever.

You hit the nail on the head. Solving CVD is as simple (for many cases but not all) as better diet and more exercise.

People get all pissed though if you try to force fast food joints to reduce saturated fats, or even publish nutritional information about their products! Its un American, give people their choice!

We regulate sex, one of the main methods of transmission of AIDS (prostitution is illegal, sodomy illegal in some states) but we won't regulate the food that is sold, oh wait, we DO regulate food, we just don't regulate the nutritional value of it, just food born disease and the like.

Your right, and it would only take "fixing" one generation's nutrition, and then future generations would only know what they were taught by the "fixed generation".......Then you could take all that money and apply it to other things such as AIDS etc.

~sigh~

It's really not that difficult.

Hell, I dont even have a problem with that!!! But when their arteries look like the clogged pipe on the drano box, and their kidneys dont work because their blood pressure has literally torn them to shreds, tell them to go F themselves.

People can have their choice.

And I'm glad we don't.

Why is the answer to everything, "Tell the Government to fix it!"

Govt is always more than happy to take in more power of your lives, outlaw whatever it wants, and force itself upon you. All in the vein of "fixing your shit for you".

Then you douches than have the audacity to complain that Govt is too big brother, has too much power over people, has too many taxes. Well DUH!

You can't have your cake and eat it too (pun intended).

People are free to do as they please, eat what they want and do as little exercise as they wish, so long I don't have to pay for the consequences of said lifestyle choice.

Oops.

Yep. Cut all research funding into diseases.

It really isn't that simple though. Diet and exercise makes a huge difference, but genes and a certain element of randomness come into play. Its not just how much plaque is in your arteries -- its much more complicated.

Now this part is dead-on true. Did you know some people are foolish enough to want to give those same people free health care for life?

We don't regulate sex like we should be if we want to truly reduce the number of HIV cases. Look at the CDC numbers -- HIV rates in gay men are insanely higher than rates in the heterosexual population.

Let's step back for a second and forget we're dealing with gay men. If we had some other terrible disease like a 100% resistant tuberculosis being passed-on by some other social practice, we'd quarantine those people and ban the social practice outright.

I would rather see them spend money trying to find cures or better medication for hiv/aids than the space program...

And spending dramatically less on both would be even better IMO.
