Hello

i have a dell laptop and i need more storage space..

should i get rid of my current hard drive (30gb) and get a new one OR....
should i get some type of external storage device ie usb drive (no firewire ports on computer)

what do you think? where should i look to get these parts?

i do need a lot more storage maybe another 30g or something...

speed is not a HUGE factor only a small concern

thanks

depends how often you travel, it would be annoying to tote an external harddrive around and plug it in/unplug it all the time.

if you just use it kind of like a desktop, you can get 200 gigabyte external USB harddrives very cheap now, I see them in the paper for like $125 with rebates. Frye's is the best store around here for that kind of stuff (Dallas, TX)

getting rid of your HD seems like a huge hassle.

Thanks Bran!!! K your way!!

Replacing the internal drive with a larger one will be an expensive operation, laptop hard drives are never cheap. I agree with Bran987, an external USB drive is the way to go for you. Besides, with an external drive, all your music, movies and porn will still be there when you eventually upgrade to a newer laptop.

Another problem with replacing the internal hard drive from a laptop is geeting all the stuff you currently have there moved to the other drive. I do this all the time on PC's using software called drive copy but I don't think I would even try it with a Laptop. External is so brainless of an operation to do, don't need any real knowledge.

thanks i appreciate it.. gave k to all i could.. lots of you i had already given too much out too..sorry i tried

I think it depends on whether you really travel with your laptop. If you do then you might not want to lug around an external drive. Also if you need more storage for programs then you'd want an internal drive. If it's for pr0n then external will do fine.

good point on the travel

i do financial presentations with my laptop but i would never rely on an external drive for that.. all of my professional stuff will always be on the laptop never external...

the external is going to be for music/and martial arts videos :)

My philosophy with laptop has always been by the best laptop you can get for the dollar and when it's time just get a new one because laptops are a bitch to upgrade except for memory. If the processor is less than 700mhz then it's a no brainer get a new laptop.
