Computer question?

ip is set by the provider. If you are talking about your mac address then no. You would have to change out the ethernet card.

As long as it isn't static you can.

Even if it is static, just give your ISP a call and request a change.

Ummm... you IP address that's on your cable modem or dsl modem? Is that what you are talking about?

If that's the case, you can just cycle power or disconnect/reconnect the system.

If you are talking MAC address changing, there are *some* cards/routers that allow you to change your MAC address to whatever the heck you want. (unlike Chesty says...)

Umm, with true static ip addresses, turning off the power won't work. Regarding the mac address, yes you can edit it.

Yeah...sorry I misrepresented that... I assumed it was DHCP. Do any non business account broadband folks have static IP addresses? I was under the assumption the residential IP addys were all DHCP.

This would'nt even matter necessarily

You can try doing an ipconfig /release........../renew.

The problem I've noticed is that some ISPs using Dynamic IP's set their lease times very high. For example, my cable sets the lease time to expire at like a week or 2. So for that whole time, even though it's DHCP, you are still getting the same IP address.

go to start... click 'RUN'

Box comes up.. enter 'cmd'

type 'ipconfig' hit enter

note the ip that comes up

type 'ipconfig/renew' hit enter

note the ip that comes up

If the new IP is different then you have succeded in changing your IP.
