Computer Purchase Question

Blew out my 17" Viewsonic CRT last night after 8 glorious years. (Paid 8 Benjamins for it back when 17's were King; at least I got my moneys worth)

Gonna cost between $150-200 bucks to replace, I figure....

I'm thinking this might be a better deal...for $300 bucks I can get the cheapest Dell which comes WITH a 17" monitor and POS Printer..so basically for a hundred bucks more I'm getting a whole new computer....(which I would either scrap, or box away and use later...)

The system I need it for is a system I build about 6 years ago: 800mghz TBird, W2kP and 640meg RAM. Basically just my surfing box....

Thoughts?

If it's just for surfing then your old TBird is still plenty. Maybe it's time to think about getting a LCD monitor. They've come down in price a lot these past few years and if the screen-size is enough for you it might make your surfing more enjoyable to have a super-crisp image. I'm still running on CRT but then I love my 2048x1536 IIyama screen.

I'd try to get reports on the Dell monitor before buying. See whether you can find what model they give and Google for reviews.

Cheap brand LCD's cost about the same as Great Name CRT's of the same size...

Don't think I wanna put that much cash down to revive the TBird.

I have an old 15" backup also....guess I could just suffer through that....

(I also have another P4/3.0 HT sys)

The Dell trhey gave me at work is pretty sweet. I took the XP install off of it and set it to work headless as a Linux server, and took the LCD over to my own box -- it has both digital and analog hookups, and a built-in USB hub. Raises, lowers, and you can pivot it to portrait mode (a feathre I too dropped $800 on back in the day, in a monitor that weighed 70 pounds). If I hve to troubleshoot another machine, I just use the analog hookup (touch one button to switch inputs) and don't have to disturb my digital connection.

They will sell you just the monitor, you know... though a P4 box for under $500 is nothing to sneeze at.

if its your surfing box, just throw the money down for a new monitor. besides you've got the p4 too.. no need to get a new system unless you plan on building a gaming rig or something (unless your p4 is a gaming rig)..

i say just goto ebay and pick up a 17".

Naw...I think its a 2.4 celeron...but the HD, 17" monitor, printer, KB/Mouse should be worth the $300...

Damn printers...it's cheaper to buy one nowadays than it is to replace the stinkin' cartridges....
