Computer problem - network connections - LAN network cable unplugged...

Sounds like you're losing conection to the DSL. What are the lights on the DSL thing doing? There should be one for signal or connection. Is it on, blinking, or off? If it's blinking, it's trying to establish a connection, off means you don't have the connection, and on means you're connected. You may want to call the DSL tech support b/c they may be having probs in your area.
 
Have you unplugged everything for a few minutes then restarted?

That's what technical support will tell you to do first.

Ok... here is what happens... when I go to sites like:

kazaa
delta.com
sunsentinel.com
ajc.com
etc..

IT IS CERTAIN SITES 100% OF THE TIME, my internet connection is lost and I can not reconnect until I reboot the machine. It will not manually or auto reconnect until I power off and power back on. It is ALWAYS with those certain sites.

now, I can leave the machine running for days and no problems, still active internet connection, but once I hit one of those sites... bang.. it is gone.

Now hotmail.com is acting the same way. Losing the connection everytime I try to access it.

I don't know why. The Bellsouth.net DSL is active now, no bad connections in the area.

I have tried downloading every single MS update and it still does this.

what else?

WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?

Now, I can use Mozilla and browse these sites. I just lost Hotmail today, I was browsing it fine yesterday...hours at a time.

I already downloaded the latest version of IE. (already had it thought, just did it to make sure).
 
It could be Hellsouth's routing tables or a worm/trojan on your box trying to contact a website. Run all them virus/trojan finding gizmos again.

Ummm... what is that. Tell me where to look and I will tell you how fast I am going.

And would that cause it to crash and need a rebooting? I thought after crashing, it should just click on the dial up and it reconnect.

Get a network speed governor. Sounds like you're going TOO fast for the internet.
 
I think you're problem with hotmail is that you are typing it incorrectly.
It's HOTMAIL, not HOTMALE

If you can connect with Mozilla but not IE, then it is an ActiveX issue that you have.

You installed something that is behaving poorly in IE.

How do I find out what?

Shouldn't everything be losing at the same time and not over a period.... like ajc.com two months ago and today Hotmail.com

I have run my virus scan and spybot... comes back clean.

CaptiveX programs are in the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
folder. You could delete everything in that folder. Whatever is necessary can/will be redownloaded. (I just tried it)

Ok... just did this.. tried to access hotmail... internet locked up and had to reboot.

So, no solution here.

Can you reset the net connection - like if your net is frozen, open up a command window and do an "ipconfig /release" and then a "ipconfig /renew" and then type "ping www.yahoo.com" to see what that says.

I'm curious if it is totally dead or just kicking out for some reason.

I will visit hotmail again when I download pest patrol and post the results.

If it locks up again.. I will try this and post the results.

Ok... it locked up again... I did this and this is the results :

ipconfig /release = No operation can be performed by Local Area Network while it has it's media disconnected.

ipconfig /renew = same error

ping www.yahoo.com = ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com please check name and try again.

You really should get something like a Linksys DSL/cable router. It might fix this problem and it's inifinitely safer anyway. The basic single-port model should be less than $75 dollars.

That is very odd.
As far as the machine is concerned, you aren't connected to the net - it is aware that it has a network card, but sees nothing in there in terms of media.

What is very weird is that sounds like a hardware issue, like a faulty cable or jack on the card - but were that the case, it wouldn't matter what browser you used.

My first guess is that it would be a virus or trojan, but it wouldn't make sense for those to sever your net connection because then they could not spread any further.

Were it just a hardware issue, it also wouldn't likely come and go over time - it would likely be due to jiggling the cable or something.

That said, if there is a chip on the card that is overheating (or some component nearby giving off heat), then it would be a time based thing - basically until enough heat built up until it gave out due to stress.

But again, this would happen regardless of the browser used.

How is it that you are on the net? You have to restart the machine?
That too is bizarre and would point to a software issue such as a virus...
 
See if there's a newer (or older) driver for the network card.
 
It could be that Hellsouth customer/hacker tried to DoS those sites and they responded by blocking your public IP subnet.....a long shot though.

Ok... I can use the net as LONG as I do not visit some of those sites that shut me down. Hotmail, ajc.com, sunsentinel.com, delta.com, etc... but when I visit those sites, within 3 seconds (no exaggerating), I am shut off the net. I have to power off and power back on all over again.

If I don't visit those sites, I can leave the machine running all week long with no shut down and NEVER lose the connection.

Now obviously the common sense solution would be to never visit those sites... but I need delta.com for all the travel I do with my company. I need hotmail for my email, I like the news site for reading... and I like kazaa for looking for new songs...

This has been going on for a long time. If you search under my name.. you will I posted this in the past and couldn't fix it then. I was hoping that someone knew something now.

That is very likely or at least very possible - BUT that wouldn't kill his network connection - it would just prevent him from going to that site.
 
Ok... how does this sound?

I am planning on buying an external hard drive (for back up purposes and for carrying all my personal stuff between my home office and the offices I travel too....)

Let's say I make a copy of everything on this computer to the external hard drive. Using Ghost or whatever you guys say is the best/easiest way to do it.

Then I wipe this hard drive completely clean and re-install XP all over again.

I would open the computer and make sure all the things were plugged in securely.

I would reinstall my bellsouth.net DSL connection. (Or could I just copy it from the external hard drive and have it work?)

I would then copy all the updates from Microsoft's update website to the computer.

Hopefully this clean install would do it so everything would run smoothly.

So... question... what do you think of this idea? Also, if I saved my entire hard drive to the external, could I just copy parts of it over - like my bellsouth connections and such (printer drivers, etc..) or would I have to reinstall it completely again.

I can access those sites from my company laptop sitting here using the same DSL modem. I just unplug from the back of my desk top and plug it into my laptop and can use those sites just fine.

I am convinced it has to be something about this machine. Not the dsl modem or bellsouth connection or anything like that.
 
You know... my win2k box exhibits this problem once in awhile.

It's like the TCP/IP stack just shits the bed. The only way to fix is to reboot the computer. No rhyme or reason to what causes it.
 
So what do those sites have in common with each other.

There are definitely known issues with spyware not behaving well and crashing the browser on some sites.

But off the top of my head I don't know of anything that breaks the stack...

Do you have all of the updates on it?

No, this is a legitimate thread. Legitimate problem.

I don't know what these sites have in common with each other. As I said, I was using hotmail all day long since January and never had a problem with it until TODAY! Now it is booting me offline as well.

It would not be so frustrating if I could just renew the internet connection WITHOUT having to reboot the whole dame machine.
 
Damn, a new computer problem that is undocumented and unheard of.

I doubt that one.

You are merely experiencing the pitfalls of an MS OS.
 
It is a simple problem. It is not your connection, hardware or anything like that. It is simply a corrupt version of Internet Explorer. You need to try to repair your O/S first. Do NOT format your hard disk, just put your Windows CD in and have it repair the O/S. If that does not work, back up your stuff and reinstall the O/S. Still have a problem after that? Backup your stuff and Format C:

I put the CD in... it has :

Install Windows

Install Optional Windows Components

Additional Tasks

Check for Compatibility.

I guess the answer lies in choice 2 or 3.
 
Ok... I tried that... AND..... nothing. It still fucking happens.

No. some of the ones do (hotmail) and some don't (ajc.com, sunsentinel.com)



I dont' have that web accelerator either that was mentioned in the link.


Maybe I should just upgrade to XP Pro and hope the problems go away.
 
Didn't you say Mozilla has no prob? Is that on the laptop or on XP? What OS is on your laptop? I would download Opera and use it, as stated above.

When did that problem start? Have you installed anything during that time? If not, you could always do a system restore. It'll put your computer back to a point before the problem started
 
I can use mozilla on this desktop that is having the problems. If I go to hotmail on here using IE6, it shuts me out. If I use mozilla and go to hotmail, I can access it.

Hotmail started yesterday. The other sites started back in March or April when I installed XP Home on here. I tried system restore last week going all the way back, but it did not help at all.

I also put my XP disc in last night and reinstalled IE all over and still nothing.

I went to the Windows Update under the Tools section on the IE browser window and did that.... it brought down some updates, not sure of what the name of all of them were. But I did install everyone it listed.

That may not work either. According to the tech guy at work, if I were having a problem with IE or OS, it would be happening at random intervals for every website. Not just the select ones that it happens on ALL the time. They are the ONLY ones that cause it.

Also, kazaa doesn't utilize IE so there is no reason why it should crash.

which contains a list of URL's that will not be displayed in IE. Simply open
the hosts (no . extention) file in notepad or wordpad and edit out the URL's
that you dont want to block.

You'll find the file here:

x:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts (x: = your boot drive. Usually C:)

just the ones you visit, if any. If you go to www.classmates.com then delete anything in the file ending in classmates.com.

Have you installed FreeBSD on a laptop? I have only ever run it as a server, never as an OS with a GUI and the like.
How hard is it to get going on a laptop?
When I was in college I loved to have stuff be hard so I could have geek cred and keep it real and all - but as I get older and try to make money off of actually doing other things, I just want things that work.
I really like FreeBSD, and I was a fearin that I would have to resort to becoming a Mac person.
Although the new 15" is calling my name pretty loudly.

2. What is the EXACT error message your getting
3. Did it start when you installed IE6?
4. Check to make sure the file LMHOSTS.SAM (in same directory as previous host file) is empty as well.
 
IE 6 also has a problem apparently handeling 128 bit encryption on websites...did you try installing IE 5 and testing that? Because if that works then I'd just dump IE6.

1 - Bellsouth.net
2 - No error message, the little green modem icon (active) at the bottom will turn yellow (unactive) and then the autoredial function will start up and attempt to dial out. It will end up saying Unable To Make A Connection At This Time. I have to reboot and then log back on the net. The rest of the computer, programs, etc.... (offline) work fine. I can sit here and do MS programs, games, DVD's, etc... just not connect to the internet until I reboot.
3 - I have had IE6 since I bought the computer and it just started this in January.
4 - I will check that too. I just renamed the previous HOST file, or should I delete everything out of that as well?


I can not install IE5 to see if that is the error. I have tried to do the IE Repair recommendation, but when I try, I get a message that says Unable To Start Set Up. XP Has Detected A Newer Version Of IE Already Installed. (This must be the update SP1 I have.)
