Computer Peeps...hard drive question

swole

Well-known member
The motherboard on my old comp went to shit and I want to extract all the files from my old hard drive into my laptop. My old PC wouldn't boot...I don't hear the normal beeps and the monitor won't turn on when the PC is trying to boot...I'm assuming it's some sort of hardware conflict with the motherboard.

I'm mainly concerned with pics, porn, resume info, etc.

I removed the hard drive from the comp...how can I do this? K for help.

get a little external case with a USB connection. Open the case, plug in the HD to the IDE interface it has inside and the power connector. Close the case, plug the case to the computer via USB and you are ready to go.

Such an enclosure will cost 20 bucks.

I was first, Bitch.

Thank you gentlemen.

I'm assuming the drive will open up as an external storage device on my other PC?

not an external storage device, it will show up as an internal device (simply another HD).

(at least, that is what happens with mine)

Yes, just like a USB jump drive, thanks for the K. Pintoca it shows up as an internal drive on yours? hmmm, maybe it depends on the usb/ide conversion electronics in the enclosure.

indeed, mine is not USB but firewire, that is the reason

awesome, thanks again fellas

k for both

swole,

here is an easier, less costly way of going about things.

take your old HD out of your old computer, hook it up to your new one (internally), and mount it as a slave drive.

should take about 5 minutes and not cost you ~$50.

His drive in his old computer is 3.5", better get a sledgehammer to mount it in his laptop.

i didn't read he was using a laptop.

if he has a desktop lying around, it would be much easier to do that than go out and get a case.

speaking of case, i need a high end one with a built in fan that can handle up to one TB. do those exist yet?

There are plenty of enclosures with and without built-in raid cards and USB/firewire interfaces (hell, there are some with external S-ATA interfaces).

As for the TB, all you need is one case that can handle 5 disks, plump in 5x250Gb disks in RAID 5 and you are ready to go.

I'm assuming you'll use RAID5, since 1TB is some serious amount already to go without protection

I agree, but I think he wanted it right away instead of waiting for a product to come in. I would Ebay anything computer related myself.

depends what it is. People pay near retail price for a lot of stuff like processors.

yo dude... send it to me, I need new porn

thanks

raid 5? aren't they super expensive?

RAID = redundant array of inexpensive discs

basically a way to manage a lot of discs to store a lot of info.

The expensive part is all the discs - setting up the raid doesnt require anything more than drivers/settings.
