computer networking question

i have 2 computers set up in my house. verizon dsl is my service provider. for the past year, everything has worked fine. the dsl line connects to the netgear router, which then connects to the dsl modem. just recently though, when both computers are connected to the router, the internet slows down after like 2 minutes and then quits working. the problem is coming from the 2nd computer, because when i hook up a different computer to the 2nd line, everything works fine. the thing is, this setup has worked fine for a year, and now it suddenly quit working. does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this? i did online updates for the router, but that didn't fix the prolem. also, when i connect the computer that is messing up directly with the modem, then it works fine, its just when i connect it through the router that it messes up both computers.
any help is greatly appreciated

It could be the network card driver. Most network cards default to autodetect the speed. You're better off hardsetting it to 10Mb full duplex or 100Mb full duplex in the network settings. Some brands suck at the detection. I'm partial to Intel Express Pro cards with 3Com a distance second. Each computer should get an IP from the router using dhcp.

thanks for the help, but i just tried that and it didn't work.
anybody else have any other ideas?
something i forgot to write the in the first post. i got a virus a few weeks ago, which is around the time this problem started. do you think maybe something could have happened to the network drivers and i should try reinstalling the network drivers?

The second computer is 'owned' and it is completely saturating your network link with spam.

No, I'm not kidding.

Odds are against you being able to download the antivirus you need using that computer -- it will either hog the line or actively keep you from getting to AV sites. Unhook it, and use the OTHER PC to download the latest anti-virus AND anti-spyware stuff. Copy it to CD-R if you can, or use floppies if that's all you've got -- but flip the little tab to make them "read only" before you put them into the infected PC.

If there's nothing on there you can't replace, reformat it and start over, but put a copy of ZoneEdit freeware on it BEFORE you let it see the network. Otherwise it'll be infected again before you can even get to Windows Update to patch it -- and you want to do that ASAP.

Anti-virus and anti-spyware look for different things, so you need both, unfortunately.

Take IPX/SPX off the broke machine, see if that clears it up.

That shit is the loudest fucking protocol ever.

Or.....

Try swapping cables out.

Also, cat-5 doesn't refer to anything feline, so stop using kittens to transmit data to the router.

it's not the cables, cause they work when i hook up another computer to the router. i hope i don't have to format. that would be a total pain.
whats IPX/SPX and how would i take that off? i'm not the brightest bulb in the box when it comes to comptuers.

It's a network protocol.
Go into network properties, scroll down until you see IPX/SPX; highlight it and click to remove it.

I doubt it's *just* that, I'd suggest re-installing the NIC card and simply not putting that protocol back on it. (Some MS games require it for multi-player games)

Broadband router, anti-spyware and anti-virus.....you need all three and maybe a software firewall too. (or you could just stop using Windows)

If it was working fine, then you got a virus, and now it isn't working, then I would go with Digger's advice. Something may have been damaged or it is still "owned".

Sounds like a reformat would fix the problem if the AV and Spy removal doesn't work.

We have all had to reformat, it happens you'll live. Keep your AV upto date & next time dont open any files you are unsure of. ever.

Sounds like sasser virus all it does is send out traffic and ping addresses non stop that is why you are seeing the speed degredation go to symantec.com and download the removal tool.

why didn't you put all that in the first post? This is why tech support refer to users as lusers.

thank you all for the help. i ended up having a buddy of mine reformat my hard drive and then we set everything back up again,, and now its all good.
