computer memory question

yo comp bros,

i got a quck question about memory. my memroy bus speed is 333 and i got a 512 stick in there that has that speed. however i just found another 512 stick lying around whcih is 266...i put it in and it works...but is this a bad idea to mix up the speeds?

Not a great idea. Some boards will freak and not boot -- sounds like you're lucky on that score.

Some will run them at mixed speed (there used to be memory test programs to help you find your "fast spots" in memory, but that was a LONG time ago)... most likely you're just running everything at the lower speed.

Now, having a gig to play with might very well offset the speed loss. You're running something fairly current as your OS on that rig, yes? What the hey, 266 ain't exactly slow.

yeah im runnin XP. it works and all, im just wondering if ill actualy be gettin wrose performance overall if i put the other stick in, cuz when i do, both run at the lower speed

Your computer will match the sticks to the lowest speed of the memory. So you will lower them both to 266. However certain types of memory has a tendency to Overclock well. If your motherboard bios supports it you may be able to manually set the speed to 333.

I general yes. What should happen is that the 333 speed ram will run at 266 to accomodate the 266 speed ram. So you get more ram but you slow the operation of the ram down.

Since your running Xp you will probably be better off with 768megs of 266Mhz ram then 512megs of 333mhz ram

do u think i should risk overlclocking the mem so both are at 333? my bios lets me override the settings. u think it could burn it out

Whatever I thouse the 266 was 256. Trying to interpret numbers. What you need to watch out for now is random crashes. Just because it appears to work doesn't mean that it will be stable. If you have one of these shitty gigabyte boards in your computer , you might as well forget about it and pull that ram out

It should be fine, might have to slow the timings a bit but imo anything above a cas of 3 is worthless.

It won't burn it out it just won't boot until you take the memory out or in the worse case manually reset the bios which is done by using a jumper inside of poppiong the watch battery in and out.

Run some prime95 and sisoft memory benchmarks. Google those.
