Computer ? Installed a new hard drive as slave..

mylife

New member
my buddy installed an additional hd and set it as slave. he installed it fine, but instead of creating one new drive (F:) it created 6 new drives and changed drives D: and E: to K: and L:

here's how it looked before

A: - floppy
C: hd
D: cdrom
E: burner

Now-

A: Floppy
C: Master HD
D: now K: drive
E: now L drive
E-J - slave hd. each containing 3 gigs.

how could he fix this so that it goes back to the original settings w/ the new drive only occupying the F: drive?

I have no clue what a slave drive it....Inform me please.

it's a black hard drive. jk. i'm not real sure what it means. i assume since he now has 2 hd's the computer has to recognize which one will be used the majority of time and that's set to Master.

kyle he doesn't have a b drive.

It sounds like the slave HD was partioned into 6 drives. Partioning means kinda spliting one hard drive into multiple drives. While it's one drive the computer will treat the partions like seperate drives. There are practical uses for this but that can be for another discussion. If this is the case and you want to undo it you will need to use the Fdisk command (from a boot disk) to delete all partitions and then create a new one made up of all the former partitions combined into one. This Microsoft Knowledge Base article shows how to use Fdisk:

How to Use Fdisk and Format to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk

flex123:
Generally a motherboard has 2 IDE slots which the main hard drive and CD/DVD Rom drive are connected to. You can add more drives because the IDE cable kinda are split/sliced. The added on drives are slaves. The main drives are masters.

You are correct.

His buddy partitioned and formatted his drive using several different partitions.

He's probably one of these weenies that thinks that using smaller partitions and smaller cluster sizes maximizes the drive space.

I would fdisk the drive and create either one or two partitions and then reformat the partition(s).

Also, you can manually reletter the drives to anything you want. I.E. D: E: F:, etc.

FDISK = :)

BTW, i am assuming you are using winXP or 2000? if not there are some partition size limitations...

I just think he didn't know what he was doing otherwise mylife wouldn't be asking about it. I've installed hard drives and seen how if you don't know what you are doing you can make multiple partions. The set up often asks how you want to partion the drive and if you don't know what a partion is you might just go ahead and make 6. Personally if I had only one hard drive I do like partioning it into 2. One partion for programs and one for documents.

His "buddy" did the handywork.

If it were a secondary drive, which this one is, there is really no point for more than one partition... Unless you just want more than one.

he's on 98 puc.

and yeah, he didn't mean to partition it like that.

i told him to download partion magician and then we're gonna try fixing it later w/ what you guys advised.

on a side note...anyone in this thread have any hardware to sell?

I know his buddy did the work. I kinda figure he was asking for him.

On the hardware for sale since I just did a ugrade I have a 64mb ISA (older slot) soundcard, 32mb PCI video card, pci modem, 500mhz AMD K-6II processor, and motherboard. All working fine. Plus I have a bunch or working keyboards, a couple of mice, and a few USB extra USB cables. And I think I have a 56K external modem too. I guess someone can PM if they are interested in any of that.

that's about the configuration he has now. i told him i'd try and find him at least a 1 ghz processor w/motherboard and around 1/2 gig of ram. so yeah, thanks anyways. i might be upgrading soon to a p4 and ddr ram so if that ends up happening ill probably just give him my 1ghz p3 w/motherbaord and 1/2 gig of pc133 ram.

B: = 5.25 floppy. correct me if I am wrong here supa noids

:fro:

You stand corrected, somewhat.

B: Could represent a 120 MB (Zip) disk, although they are normally integrated with 3.25" floppy.

Yours in nerdness,

X.

I didn't read the other responses, but you can download a program called "Partition Magic," and it will correct all of your partitioning issues.
