Computer help....

most mother boards have a limitation to how much it can handle, try taking out the other 2 sticks and just have the 512 in.

It fairly common for motherboards not to recognize 512mb sticks. How old is the board? Also what OS are you using? Win 98 only supports of to 512mb of RAM. You also could try a different brand of memory especially since the 512mb ones seem kinda tempramental. PNY is a good brand. Sometimes that does the trick. Last thing and it seems obvious but did you get the right kind of memory. So if you need pc100 you didn't buy pc133?

well first try removing the old memory and putting in the 512 meg stick and see if it actually works at all... you could have bought a bogus one or it may be incompatible with your motherboard.

are the 256 pc100 or pc133? I had compatible issue with memory that was supposed to be backward compatable but wasn't. Basicaly if one stick is pc100, it's best if all are.

wow I wish I had some computer knowledge to toss in.

Your motherboard might be disconnected from your mainframe, which is possibly plugged into your wrong portal hole. That hole might be used to connect to the doohickey majiggy.

Yeh, it's good... Maybe it's my motherboard?

Xbiker, want to hear a joke that will make you turn gay? Oopsies, looks like you already heard it!

GOODNESS!!

I gotta nuther one that WAANNNTTSSSS ME!

2 fer 2.

2 Bad I no swing yur way... Keep trying.

Youare so mizuch more creative than your mentor. Hopefully you can come up with sum decent materialll.

prolly not the mb being bad altho there is a chance it may not handle that much memory... it should tell you in your manual if it can tho... it should be jumperless and automatic as well... have you checked your bios settings?

bios settings? wtf is that? lol

Xbiker, how's the gf/wife/fiancee ?

You need to look up the spec's on your mainboard (MB), JR.

Most MB's these days limit the amount of memory at 1 GB.

Server MB's and such have higher limitations, but that's not really relevant in this case.

More than likely, your board won't accept that size of DIMM. 256 works, right? Then perhaps you should go wit 3 X 256 MB sticks and settle for 768 MB of riz-am.

Go to the manufactureeeeeeers syt if you know the brannnnnnnnd of your board and you can view the spizzzzeks.

See, even I can BBBB friendly. :D

also, check your owner's guide. sometimes for a certain amt of memory, the larger one has to be in the first slot, or if it's a total retard motherboard, they all have to be the same size. Also, it should cover changing your BIOS settings if that is needed for a memory upgrade.

Also, make sure it is "locked" into place; sounds silly, but sometimes you can think it's in, but it isn't.

If the stick is bad or the speed is mismatched, sometimes the computer won't even power up vs. just not recognizing it, hopefully just a config/placement issue.

Um....

READ THE MANUAL! ;)

Your motherboard should come with a manual telling you all kinds of specs....

You need to look for....

1. Max RAM memory it can have (mine says up to 1 GB, but never tested for compatability)

2. Type of RAM memory you can/must use.

3. MAXIMUM SIZE RAM PER SLOT!!!! Your stick might exceed the capacity of any one slot, so the computer can't recognize this. Perhaps a replacement BIOS chip will get around this, but it's just easier to put in 2 smaller memory sticks (to get the 512MB) than one 512MB stick that's not compatible.

This is frustrating because to max out memory on any computer, you must invest in base memory that maxs out the first slot. Otherwise, you'll have to replace smaller sticks with larger ones and find a buyer for the smaller stuff when you want to upgrade. You only get X amount of memory slots. :(
