Computer Help! XP is going crazy...

I can't seem to get past the sign on screen in XP. Every time I put my password in, my CPU restarts. It's getting annoying. It is my home CPU by the way. On a side note, safe mode is working. What can I do to fix this?

Have you tried rolling backk the system to a sytem restore point while you were in safe mode?

I would try to starting in safe mode. On most computer you hit F8 or F5 when it's booting up. Then do a system restore. I'd go for the oldest point there. Also it could be a heat issue. If the restore doesn't work try letting the computer sit turned off for about 30 mins to give it a chance to cool down.

Looks a bit like the Sasser virus :worried:

Is your antivirus up to date ?

Alright, I got my computer started this morning by hitting F8 and going to 'last config that worked'

My CPU is up and running and it's F'N slow. I went to Symantec and started d/l the new virus definitions and running the checkup. I will check up when I get back from work to see how's it running. My CPU also automatically detects new Microsoft additions so I've been d/l accordingly. As of now Sasser is not the problem

Anything else I need to do to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Yeah - d/l and run adaware and/or spybot to strip out any spyware.

Download and use Firefox as your web browser - it will alleviate a lot of future security problems that occur from using IE.

Most of the times people's computers are running slow it's because the have too much shit starting up in the background when they boot up. On the start menu go to RUN and type MSCONFIG and the go the the startup tab. I only have 8 items checked and I know for for sure I want all of the starting up when I start. Most things should NOT be checked when booting up. Note a few things should be check and if you are unsure leave it check until you ask someone who knows. Things with DLL or that say print or tray definately need to be left checked.

Reasons like that are why I stick with IE over all over browsers and believe me I'd like not to have deal with IE and the crap the comes along with it but it's the browser most web pages are designed for and I've seen pages not load right in any other browser.

Yes, but... you know how to handle the various messes the IE will bring to you. You are also pro-active to make sure you wont have a lot of problems. Those two things are a common trait NOT held by the vast majority of the people who end up with "problems" on their computers.

Of course. People would don't know computers at all could avoid a lot of crap by Macs but if more people used Mac then they would be the target of attacks. I had a friend who had his computer for a year and asked me to take a look at it because it was slow. It was so messed up it had to be reformatted. Basically if you have windows and use IE you can't just surf and that's it. You have to clean up at least once a week or you are you gonna have major problems.

I don't know if I'd go that far. If you:

Use a login that doesn't have inherent admin/root permissions (a big point often overlooked...)
Keep the machine fullly patched
Have anti-virus installed AND updated definitions
Have a firewall

You'll be prety safe, even if you use IE.

Oh yeah. That is a good way to go about it. The reason I do that is because sometimes I had want to dl and run a program and I can't do that if I don't have admin tool and my computer and maybe in the middle of a process and I don't want to reboot. And I've never liked running multiple accounts at once but for the average the person the xp user account thing is a very good option. I'm out there surfing naked (well I do have a route and that acts as a firewall) because it how I am going to have optimal performance from my machine. But I know how to proctect myself. Most don't.

i've gotten real used to firefox in a short period of time. someone said they'd hook me up with an XP copy so i can dual boot XP and mandrake. if all goes well, i'll be setting up firefox in XP.

If I remember right, you need to load XP first, then load Linux if you are going to dual boot. Don't quote me on that, but do check and see which OS needs to be loaded first.

Fedora Core is supposed to be nice, though I don't have that loaded on any of my systems right now. I'm debating what version of *nix I'll load up on this machine when I move to dual boot it.

I just went to run and the last item in there was:

regsvr32 /u "c:\windows\jkwyithn.exe

WTF is that?

It's the "jerkwithin" virus, so consider the source. :D Also better known as PEBKAE. Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Enduser.

;)

Yo, I need Yankee tickets. My boy left Paine Webber which means no more box seats behind the dugout.

The bastard...

i think i could load XP and then just redo the mbr with a boot disk. should take care of the problem. hopefully. if i get the XP disc.

oh yeah, MY JAVA WORKS! :garza: :garza: :garza:

i had to actually log in as root, not become root in a terminal. i find that kind of odd because i've done stuff through a terminal no problem. oh well.

java works! :D

firefox and java just crashed and burned, but it was nothing that CTRL ESC couldn't take care of ;)

obviously firefox is working again, or i wouldn't be posting.
