Complaining Neighbours

Hello All,

A little help needed. One of our neighbours is being very unreasonable by making constant complaints about the level of "Noise". Truth is, she is being far to sensitive. I don't consider working a lawnmover or washing up as being noisy, but she goes nuts. Apart from telling her to F.O, how can I approach it? I'm almost afraid to lock the door in case she comes steaming over complainign she can't sleep.

Unless you are mowing the yard in the middle of night, I don't think there is much she can do about it. I'd tell her to buy some earplugs if she's trying to sleep during the day.

We need more details. Where do you live? A house? Multifamily? etc.
How old is she?
What time are you doing these activities?
Is she hot?

I don't know about where you live, but here, the local noise ordinance is 10 p.m., you can make all the noise you want until that time.

Well, you can make all the noise you want anytime at night too, as long as no one complains.

Generally speaking in the UK you are permitted to make reasonable levels of noise between the hours of 07:00 and 23:00. You don't want to be fighting with your neighbours if it can be helped but if she isn't reasonable then you need to play the game right. I would research exactly what the law says on noise levels and the times at which you are within your rights to operate certain household devices (stereo, mashing machine etc). I'd also look into the laws on harassment if she's going to continue to complain and disturb your peace by banging on your door everytime you turn on the hoover.

This page might be a good starting point - http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1996/1996037.htm

If she gets upset over lawn mowing at 4 in the afternoon, then she's the one with the problem. I have had a lot of disputes with noisy neighbors in apartments but those always involved loud music shaking the floor all day and night. Lawn mowing and running water are part of normal life and this chick is just going to have to learn to deal with it.
