I find it an amazing profession also. I look back now and wonder why I never did anything like that.

Notice when where his hands are when he's launched off the deck? They are holding onto handholds - the F-18 takes off with no hands on the stick.

The visor is needed for both glare and eye protection. I prefered using a visor vs. sunglasses because it gave better wraparound protection. The UV is also harsher up at altitude. Another reason for the visor is eye protection in case anything nasty happens and shit starts blowing around the cockpit.
