collostrum - the next miracle drug!!?

 ;) :D

well, had to get ur attention

seriously tho

anyone think this is worth adding to the shake?? - anyone use GNC's heard it was pretty good - especially for them.

If you are serious - no it is not worth adding. Oral colostrum is destroyed during digestion (unless you are an infant). It is worthless although you may consider using it as an enema - Got Milk:D

I hate to even question anyone on this subject who goes by that handle but why can an infant (human, cow or other) absorb it perfectly well and not adults???????

dnp- is that a specific enzyme or the whole group of them that we normaly use to digest? - seems thers got to be away around it - u think that it really doesnt have value??? - no flame bro, just got ????

Babies are amazing little critters , their bodys don't have the enzime to break down and destroy it. But did you know that if you were never wheened from brest milk that you would never carry that enzime ? But you would also wind up with a serously under developed digestive system.
Just think how do babes, that need oxygen from the instant they are concived, live in fluid for 9 months
The embryotic fluid has all the nutrients and oxygen , that is what you need to be looking for as a suppliment

Afterbirth , Mmmm yummmy

 carrera - now were talking!!! lets bottle that stuff up and go into business!!!! slight problem wiht the sterility issue tho - but hey yuo just know if it would put on 10lbs of lean muscle mass per month, there would be a line of people fighting to get some! :D

Theoretically, adults should digest colostrum away to nothing (babies don't have the developed GI's necessary for protein digestion). But there have been a few studies showing increases in IGF levels with colostrum use in adults. J. Antonio covered the studies in a Muscle and Fitness article.

CARRERA, please elaborate on your post, I am very confused.

When looking for a colostrum you need to make sure you are getting the brand that has "first milking" colostrum high in growth factors.

Colostrum can help athletes in several ways:
Colostrum builds lean muscle.
One of the real problems with achieving muscular development lies, not just in harnassing anabolism but in preventing catabolism. A true, first-milking, colostrum contains two important compounds which work synergistically to accomplish the building of lean muscle mass (IgF-1, GH)

Colostrum Aids metabolism for a more efficiant use of fuel and greater energy. Studies have shown that colostrum shifts fuel utilixation to fat, actually preventing the body from burning glucose for energy. The additional growth factors in colostrum keep GH level in the body high enough so that protein is not compromised during heavy workouts. It also stimulates glucose transport in the muscle, making more efficient use of the available fuel. Athletes and bodybuilders often report that they have lost weight while gaining inches.

Colostrum Repairs tissue and speeds healing

Colostrum supports the immune system

Colostrum helps with nutrient uptake

It's a bit expensive though, what sort of dosages do you take? It sounds like you are a fan of it. What about the fact that some claim it is not absorbed by adults? Have you read studies that show improvements in athletes/bb'ers taking colostrum?

i have taken it for six months now without being sick and have noticed a better recovery time. I did have test flu though.hahah

Many people engaging in athletic activity find colostrum benefits helpful to improve performance. Body-builders like colostrum because colostrum has been shown to increase muscle mass. It's best to take the colostrum 30-45 minutes before workout. Athletes often use 3000-6000 milligrams per day. This is the recommended usage, although many body-builders use more.

In a double blind, placebo controlled trial from the University of South Australia study, 51 male power sport participants completed and eight week standardized training program while consuming 60 grams daily of either colostrum or whey protein.

The athletes were tested for power performance in a battery of tests before beginning supplementation and at weeks four and eight.

The colostrum group significantly improved their maximal vertical jump heights compared to the whey protein group. The colostrum group also improved their post-recovery vertical jump performance significantly more than the control group. there were strong trends for the colostrum group in absolute and relative peak power outputrs in cycling and peak force generated by knee flexion exercises.

Dr. Jose Antonio, a Ph.D. in the Human Performance Lab at the University of Nebraska and the Adjunct Health and Science Editor for Muscle and Fitness magazine has concluded a study comparing the effects of colostrum to the effects of a placebo in healthy, active men and women, ages 18-35. This study investigated the changes in overall body weight, composition, muscle endurance and exercise performance of subjects supplementing with colostrum. The results of this study can be found in Nutrition. Volume: 17, pages 243-247.

Dr. Antonio has written various articles concerning the benefits of colostrum on athletic performance. His most recent article can be seen in the October 1999 issue of Muscle and Fitness, entitled, "Colostrum Revisited: Is this compound the mother's milk of sports performance?" This article, like others, describes clinical studies that have determined the beneficial effects of colostrum on athletic performance.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of 8 wk of bovine colostrum supplementation on body composition and exercise performance in active men and women. Subjects were randomly assigned to a placebo (whey protein) and colostrum group (20 g/d in powder form). Each subject participated in aerobic and heavy-resistance training at least three times per wk. Body composition was assessed via dual x-ray absorptiometry analysis. Treadmill time to exhaustion, one repetition maximum strength (bench press), and the total number of repetitions performed during one set to exhaustion at a submaximal load for the bench press (50% and 100% of body weight for women and men, respectively) were ascertained. The whey protein group experienced a significant increase (P < 0.05) in body weight (mean increase of 2.11 kg), whereas the colostrum group experienced a significant (P < 0.05) increase in bone-free lean body mass (mean increase of 1.49 kg). There were no changes in any of the other parameters measured. Thus, supplementation with bovine colostrum (20 g/d) in combination with exercise training for 8 wk may increase bone-free lean body mass in active men and women.

Effects of bovine colostrum supplementation on serum IGF-I, IgG, hormone, and saliva IgA during training.

Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyvaskyla, 40351 Jyvaskyla, Finland.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of bovine colostrum supplementation (Bioenervi) on serum insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), immunoglobulin G, hormone, and amino acid and saliva immunoglobulin A concentrations during a strength and speed training period. Nine male sprinters and jumpers underwent three randomized experimental training treatments of 8 days separated by 13 days. The only difference in the treatments was the drink of 125 ml consumed per day. Posttraining increases were noticed for serum IGF-I in the 25-ml Bioenervi treatment (125 ml contained 25 ml Bioenervi) and especially in the 125-ml Bioenervi treatment (125 ml contained 125 ml Bioenervi) compared with the placebo (normal milk whey) treatment (P < 0.05). The change in IGF-I concentration during the 8-day periods correlated positively with the change in insulin concentration during the same periods with 25-ml Bioenervi treatment (r = 0.68; P = 0.045) and with 125-ml Bioenervi treatment (r = 0.69; P = 0.038). Serum immunoglobulin G, hormone, and amino acid and saliva immunoglobulin A responses were similar during the three treatments. It appears that a bovine colostrum supplement (Bioenervi) may increase serum IGF-I concentration in athletes during strength and speed training.
