College?

No flaming or anything but here we go.
Please only answer if you can help with any ideas or knowledge on the college.
Im just a person who worries way to much. I always think of the negative side and have been worrying so much this year that I am hardly having any fun my senior year. My current gpa is a 3.1 and i reside in Alaska and am white. I have taken the sat twice neither with great luck. 940 and 980.
I am in the top 50 percent and have improved over the years.
EC's:
•Football: 2 Years Varsity, Lettered
•Soccer: 10 years of competitive /recreational, 3 time Memorial day tournament participant (Texas)
•Golf: 7 Years, Recreational, Attended Multiple Camps and Clinics.
•Local church volunteer for youth group along with 8 years of student learning and active participation. (got letter of recomendation from church leader)
•Two time gold medal winner: Anchorage Youth Ski League
•25 hours/week as a Lifeguard for 13 months+
•Adept with various computer languages and computer software ex. Webpage Design and knowledge of HTML, PHP, Perl.

So being from alaska, decent ec's, 3.1 gpa and 2 letters of recomendation I am looking at applying to these schools. I was wondering if you guys can give me any idea of how it is looking and if there is a chance. I want to go pre-dental and become a dentist. Also thinking of going business as a backup.

List of Schools:
Arizona State
Arizona
Gonzaga
Florida State (Might be a super reach but being from Ak might help??)
Montana State Bozeman
Texas atm (dad went there)
TCU (Texas Christian)
Washington State
Western Oregon

Please let me know guys and help me get some stress out Thanks
Zac

SAT's hurt you a little but I go in NYU with less that all that but I had better SATs and being a minority actually does help somewhat when it comes to gettin into college's too but I don't think you have anything to worry about. I think being from Alaska should help too. Maybe because it's so damn cold up there I dunno.

Arizona State -- slight reach
Arizona -- reach
Gonzaga -- reach
Florida State -- reach
Montana State Bozeman -- match
Texas atm (dad went there) -- which one? CS is a reach, even with a legacy. Satellite uni's are matches/safetys
TCU (Texas Christian) -- reach
Washington State -- match
Western Oregon -- match, possible safety

Your SAT scores will hurt you the most. RETAKE THEM and get >1100. Hire a personal SAT tutor if necessary. Or try taking the ACT. The SAT and ACT are very different styles, and you may excell at one and not the other.

What is your exact class ranking? Is your 3.1 weighted or unweighted? Do you have an upward trend in your GPA? How many honors or AP classes did you take? Do you have GOOD essays? All of these can make a significant difference in getting into a university, as the adcoms don't necessarily look solely at your GPA.

Your best bet to get into a top 50 uni is to go to a satellite uni or cc for a year or two and then transfer. The adcoms take your GPA and SATs as predictions of how well you will do at the university level. If you get a year or two in at a cc and keep a 3.2+ with challenging courses and good ECs, you will show them that you are more capable than your HS scores might show. Keep in mind that being out of state or in state can help or hurt you, depending on the school.

If you want any specific school's admissions stats, feel free to ask, and I will post them.

How many schools do you plan on applying to? I would suggest 2-3 each of safetys, matches, and reaches.

@ Baby Zacharia......

I think you should go to Arizona State, Florida State or Gonzaga.

All are great schools, I go to ASU, and I know the campus and academic standards well.

You can't go wrong with any of those three........after that the level of quality drops off.

What is your major? Speak on it lil' white homey.

I think that you shouldn't ask a Fitness board to help you decide on your academic future. Just a thought. :)

why not? fitness progresses by setting goals, academics is no different.

ASU is geigh, dont go there. Division is lying.

UofA is awesome on the other hand. Business is a solid program here.

You definitely want to try to take the SAT again if you can. You'll be much more likely to get accepted. Or you can try the ACT as someone else said. I for one did much better on the SAT. To be honest I don't know if you'll get into many out of state schools with those SAT scores. Just being honest.

washington state is not too hard to get into, I've seen people get into it with 2.4s and 2.8s
