Anyone watch this yesterday morning? It is a morning talk show on ESPN2. Granted, it is on very early, and this interview took place at around 7am. Anyhow, they interviewed former Pittsburgh Steeler Lineman Steve Courson, and some Doc. BOTH were actually very well-versed on the realities of steroids, which shocked the holy fuck out of me. Courson especially, since he was one of the people(in my opinion) who helped to make them illegal, when he admitedly LIED during a "Nightline" interview saying that Steroids caused him to need a heart transplant. That was 12 years ago. He never got the transplant. He is still alive, and looks like he could jump back on the line right now if he wanted.
Both stated that there were NO STUDIES on the effects on athletes to the negative from taking Steroids. The doc said that "we will probably start to see the effects of steroids on the players who took them during Steve Coursons day soon" though, to which Courson eliquently replied "I disagree. These drugs have been around for 60 years. If were were going to "see the effects soon" as you put it Doctor, then we surely would have already". I thought that was a VERY good point. Courson then stated, when asked about his heart condition, that it was misinterpreted at the time, and that NO DOC EVER told him that Steroids caused whatever heart problems he was having in the late 80's. He stated that if there are any negative steroid effects that, in his opinion, they were caused by the effects on obesity that these drugs can have. He said that "a guy that weighs 300 pounds and has ripped abs isn't normally thought of as obese, but according to the body index/mass charts, that's exactly what you are." I found that interesting as well.
